Can You Change Car Insurance Companies Whilst a Claim Is Still Open?

Hey guys,

Abit of a curve ball, but hoping someone can shed some light for me..

I lodged a claim back in late December with my current insurer due to hail damage, had to go to their assessment center in January, got assessed, approved and they booked me in for repairs for 20th June.

Now in the meantime, my policy is due for renewal on 10th June.

Am I still within my right to shop around for a better price on my policy and what would happen if I changed insurers before my car actually gets repaired???

I have already received a comparable quote from another insurer for about $100 less.

Cheers

what did your current insurer say when you asked them?

      I haven’t asked them yet….

That's your homework for this afternoon.

I would expect less "cooperation" from your 'old' insurer.

    .

  • Don't put pressure on yourself by changing companies while you car is getting repaired. You may still be entitled with but why make it harder. Just let them repair it & then change insurance companies when its done. Pay month by month & hopefully it will be done quick.

If they have already approved it and booked you in then I can't see why not, I wouldn't be 100% surprised if for some "unforeseen" reason that your repair is further delayed though. You may also have an issue with "unrepaired damage" and getting new insurance cover though. But seriously how has it taken 6 months already?

  • Yes you can.

Instead of saving $100 on your renewal, use this to try and get a better result for your claim. And even then, I routinely get at least that much off my premiums just by calling up and asking for a lower rate - just mention you're a long time customer, you want to stay with them but don't understand why they're more expensive, etc (the reasons don't really matter that much, it just gives the call center person the ability to write something into the "reasons" field so they can offer you the discount).

yes you can, you where insured with that mob and paid fees for that date, there is nothing they can do about it, change your insurer, the old one still needs to fix it up, as you where insured with them at the time of the event.

    • Cheers, that's what I would have thought… The 'incident' happened during my coverage period - it's not my fault that it's taken their repair centre nearly 5 months to repair - I guess that's the downside of not having the option of your own repairer…

You can, but you will need to claim existing damage on your vehicle when you sign up for new insurance.

  • Why did it take insurance company 6 months to process your claim

Why did you reply to a 1 year old thread?

Hail damage = lots of cars damaged = takes a long time
