Mobile Screen Repair Shop Have Broken My Mate 9 Phone - Looking for Advice

Hey guys, was hoping for some advice on what you would do in this situation.

My phone screen cracked about 3 months ago, but as it was only minor and the phone was still usable I continued to use it.

Finally having enough spare cash to get it fixed, I took it into a screen repair place in the CBD that had a few good reviews and was close to Uni.

One week later they give the phone back to me and the screen looked like it didn't fit and was clearly the wrong screen (but was displaying fine, and the repaid lady said it was okay so I left with it..). After factory resetting the phone, and the screen didn't turn on, I took the phone back to the shop. The lady said there was an issue with the screen from the supplier and she would get another one shipped ASAP and replace it (big warning signs at this point but I had already paid up front and they have a fair amount of good reviews)

After two weeks of chasing them up, I finally got the phone back yesterday. The screen looks good, but the lady tells me that 'sometimes it doesn't turn on, because the motherboard is damaged from when you dropped it' - this sounds like crap to me, as the phone worked perfectly fine for several months with this 'broken motherboard'.

Since getting the phone back I've been unable to turn it on at all, and the lady is refusing to help saying it's due to the 'broken motherboard from when I dropped it'.

What can I do in this situation? I'm waiting for them to give me the documentation back 'verifying' the issue.

  • The phone is? The shop is not the famous dr boom, right?

    • The Phone is a Mate 9 bought from a deal on here just before Christmas. Not dr boom.

  • Is it a glass repair or whole assembly?
[edit] How much did u pay?

    • Was a glass repair for $180.

After she had fixed it she rang and said she 'replaced the speaker and inner frame because they were both broken', although the speaker was working fine for the 2 months the screen was cracked but usable.

[edit] without asking if this is something I wanted done.

      • Well if you got it back and it had other issues with the speaker/frame, you'd be here complaining about it anyway, so seems like they made the right call…

        • Did you even read the OP?

Every function of the phone worked perfectly for 2 months after the drop, aside from several cracks in the glass front.

      • WTF $180 for a glass job. I charge $80 for the whole screen assembly. 10 min job. If this was a glass job they probably accidentally scratched the display cable which would explain why the screen is turning on and off. 80% sure that this is not broken motherboard.

  • They might also cannibalize the good parts of your phone and replace it/them with some crappy unoriginal parts.

    • They had another of the same phone on sale as second hand. I'm worried they 'fixed the speaker' of my phone to swap it out with the phone they have there for sale.

  • I was going to take my phone to get its screen replaced the other day, but I had to sign a document saying if anything went wrong with the phone later, they would not be responsible. I didn't feel confident to check out every single function when picking it up (not to mention something starting to go wrong later) and it was working fine apart from the cracked screen so I decided not to get it repaired after all. Did you have to sign a declaration like that? If so, they can probably get out of responsibility.

The declaration said that nothing could be refunded due to water damage or motherboard issues.

Which is why i think that once they broke the phone they backtracked and said oh no it has motherboard issues in the first place (which they conveniently didn't notice the three times they tried to replace the screen)

      • They were paid to replace the screen, not troubleshoot and fix your entire phone. Plus, mobiles are basically all motherboard anyway these days, and obviously your phone copped a bit of damage when whatever happened to break the screen happened.

  • Honestly I'm not even sure they're in the wrong. The phone obviously took some damage because you cracked the screen. It's common in electronics, especially fairly fragile ones like computer parts and mobiles, that even minor damage can result in sporadic issues down the line. And you said that the screen worked fine until you factory reset it which matches what the shop says - that it's a sporadic issue.

I don't really turn my phone off all that much anyway, and it's going to be impossible for you to prove that whatever happened to break the screen didn't also affect anything else.

Why did the phone work fine before it got "repaired" though? If dropping it caused the problems you'd think they'd have manifested themselves long before the "repair".

    • It just seems a bit suspicious that the phone worked fine for 2 months before they went near it, it also worked fine after factory resetting before taking it into the shop.

I know i'm going to have a hard time proving anything regardless.
