Nissan Xtrail TV Ad- Sending The Wrong Message

What’s the go with the new Nissan Xtrail advert currently being aired on tv? The one where the lady steps out into traffic and the technology of the car detects her and slows the car to a halt! What kind of message is this sending to the youth of today about being accountable for your own actions, she’s even pictured with headphones on, as is the daughter of the driver, as if to show the similarities. What happens when the vs commodore behind without the active braking runs right up the ass of the Xtrail and the pedestrian walks off??

Just boggles the mind how reliant we are on technology for our personal safety and security. Truly a cotton wool generation being bred.

I saw that too, these people running ads just have no idea. Dont they test screen this stuff before it's sent out?.

What has a safety feature of a car got to do with others being accountable for their actions? It's an accurate depiction of the isolated world people live in and to an extent, although not shown, that ad applies to drivers that text and drive.

Not sure why this bothers you so much. You're never going to change the masses to be thoughtful and considerate so we may as well program machines to think a little bit for us.

The thing I'm worried about is when people get reliant on it,then one day something goes wrong and it doesn't work, then someone gets killed who wouldn't have been if the driver was properly in control.

    What Nissan car ad? That is an ad for headphones! O_o;

    Few key points

    • Plenty of cars have anti-collision braking systems. Yes I think it's lazy driving, but I believe the point of the system is to be an aid, not a replacement of driver awareness. Someone who is so shit at driving that they would be constantly relying on this system was likely a shit driver before the introduction of these systems. Difference is that now the pedestrian might live. Even if they too are too stupid and distracted.

    • If the car behind runs up the arse of the X-trail because the x-trail anti-collision system kicked in, than the car behind is guilty of failing to leave sufficient distance between vehicles.

    • cars running into the back of cars that are emergency braking already happens all the time. Autonomous won’t change that much until it is in the majority of cars. Ie when the following cars can auto brake better.

  • Funnily enough this was on Jalopnik today: https://jalopnik.com/nissans-star-wars-commercial-for-its-se…

the vs commodore behind without the active braking

But it will have bubbles in the window tint

If you feel strongly enough about it, you can file a complaint with ad standards.

    https://adstandards.com.au/lodge-complaint

Have a read of some of the recent cases and complaints on their register. There are plenty that take a safety / irresponsible-example angle.

Anyone dumb enough to blindly step out in front of traffic is already a lost cause, so the ad isn't going to do any harm. It is mind boggling how stupid some pedestrians and drivers are though.

remember we live in a world where people were eating laundry detergent pods for youtube fame

The go is, the current X-trail is such a nothing car that Nissan have to pretend exclusive ownership to some fairly “pedestrian” technology.

  • This will be an interesting development when autonomous cars are the majority. You’ll be able to walk out in front of the traffic and it will stop for you. For now there aren’t enough equipped to stop for you so it’s a big gamble.

What happens when the vs commodore behind without the active braking runs right up the ass of the Xtrail

the driver of the commodore would be liable and should make a claim with their insurer.

    • +1

But as the driver of the commodore can't afford insurance he will join OzB to ask for advice? The most popular answer (one that tends to shift blame) will be autonomous cars react to quickly and must be modified as the sudden stops are the equivalent to a brake check? LOL

      • +1

        The most popular answer

the most common reply would be can't afford insurance, can't afford to drive.

          Yes that's right

First of all, the OP has to be winding us up. "What message is this sending to the Youth of today" has been the catchcry of the older generation since time immemorial. I'm sure there was a cave man version of it.

However, let's play here. Yesterdays "salve" to the lazy driver becomes tomorrows "safety necessity". Seat belts, air bags, car's designed so when the mirror broke off you did get a sharp bit that impales people, crumple zones, rear facing child seats. Let's also add in parking assist detectors, hands off parking, rear view cameras, dashboard cameras. All useful devices so assist people with safety. The breaking assist is the next cab off the rank, and it will save lives. People are inattentive, children run out on the road, the car in front stops suddenly. Less accidents, less injuries.

My only beef with all this is it is yet another piece of technology to breakdown and need repairing. To paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson. In the old days cars were built by Communists so you could repair them with a hammer; nowdays you need a technology specialist to deal with the software, and hardware, issue that might arise. Sod the message sent to the next generation, just make sure you have money saved so you can keep all the safety features running.

  • Ads have either been about propoganda or marketting a product for increased sales.

It has never been about good values and warm feelings.

    Nothing has changed.

  • LOL I have one of these AEB cars.. While I agree with the OP in some ways, the federal legislation doesnt.

To get 5 stars you need AEB and a whole bunch of safety devices.

Also drive a car with AEB… I wouldnt rely on it for shit… its just not that trustworthy.

    • I think you make the good point "you woudn't rely on it for shit" while that's a personal appraisal by someone who owns and drives one of the "assistive" anti-collision braking systems, it's relevant!

If in the situation the video describes the driver who us travelling at low speed can't read the road and stop before the pedestrian walks out somethings wrong.

What the ad doesn't account for is the human element to perceive possible danger events before they happen. Ask any motorcyclist about driving awareness.
