Hi all,
Does anyone know the rules in installing CCTV at workplace in Victoria? it would be nice if you can provide vic government link too
Can the employer install CCTV facing the staff work area?
I went to OAIC, this is what it says:
Where the monitoring includes retention of a record of the staff activity, for example, a CCTV video recording or a computer record of emails, then the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) may apply.
State laws generally regulate the installation and use of CCTV. Some states also have specific workplace surveillance laws. You can contact the Attorney General’s Department in your state or territory for more information on your state or territory’s surveillance and monitoring laws.
sigh, does it mean I need to contact AG Victoria?
Yes, write to the body responsible in your state and ask for clarification for your particular field of work.
Most work places have some form for CCTV surveillance in-place.
"Can the employer install CCTV facing the staff work area?"
Most work places have CCTV camera's in such area (till area, food prep area, anywhere they deem necessary, shop floor, sales area).
Almost all companies & organisation monitor staff network / internet browsing activity as well, so best to assume you have no right to privacy whilst at work.
