What Will You Be Buying from Overseas This Month before GST Kicks in on July 1st?

What is on your purchase list before July 1st arrives?

I'll be doing a stock up from my usual favourite stores….Amazon USA, Book Depository, Saks, Nordstrom, Selfridges, Cult Beauty. Mainly buying books, cosmetics and clothing that I can't get in Australia or that are sold here at unfair prices. Plan to buy enough that will last until my next overseas trip in 12-18 months - I will stock up during travels in future as I refuse to let Gerry Harvey force me to buy local at inflated prices and without the equivalent range.

I'm looking to buy "The Politics of Achieving a Cartel". There are a lot of second hand versions available on Amazon now for some reason.

  • Silly question….. does anyone know if GST will apply to items purchased prior to 30 June but arrives after 1 July?

The retailer is collecting the tax so no (there was a proposal to have the shipping company collect it like happens with larger purchases)

Have a few hundred dollars worth of CDs in the Shopping Cart.
Also several hundreds worth in the ImportCds.com cart.
      Also some DVDs.

Many of the titles are already more than double the price here in Oz,if available at all.

    • All the books I've had on my wishlist
    • Some new business shirts
    • Japanese model kits

  • is it the GST that will apply for items under $1000 now?

    • Yes. All items no matter what value.

  • So, why are we buying stuff before 1st July? Is it to save tax? I'm completely unaware sorry.
    How does it works?

    • If you buy online from overseas after July 1st you will pay 10% GST on top. Even if value of goods is less than $1000.

Previously you only paid GST on orders/goods above $1000.

    • I might be wrong but what I get is from july we will not be allowed to shop on Amazon US anymore.

Hey guys, I'm working on a story with SBS News and I'm looking for someone to be interviewed on TV about anything they've bought ahead of the GST. Mainly because they are concerned the prices will go up. Needs to be based in Syd or Melb, and availabl this Friday 29th June
