Are iPhone X's Bought from Telstra Outright Carrier Locked?

Hi,
I got an iPhone X from a friend for helping his business out, this was purchased directly from Telstra using a credit system his company has.

I am wanting to sell the iPhone rather than use it, so I don't want to unbox it.

What I need to know is if the iPhone X is likely to be carrier locked or unlocked.

        yes

    no

    • So if I advertise it as "carrier unlocked" I will be correct?

        no.

        • iphones are totally unlocked now and not locked to any carrier.
so it cannot be carrier unlocked as it was never locked.

just make sure you HAVE the money in your account BEFORE you ship it or i guarantee everyone will laugh at you in a weeks time if you post some thread saying "someone scammed my iphone x"

    • or buyer grabbed the phone and run away

    • I'm going to sell it on gumtree for cash in hand or use it myself.

No it isn't locked to any provider, all iPhones are fully unlocked now.

If you're going to sell it, I'd advise using this promotion if you're targeted.

New thread , "Paypal refunded buyer after claimed item received not as described and return shipping with empty box"

      • If I sold it on ebay I'd record myself packing and mailing it.

        • If it is unopened, how could you prove it is an iPhone X whatever in the box?

        • @djkelly69:
I'll probably open it if I decide to sell on ebay. Just not on gumtree. Because I can have the person it open it in front of me if they want to. (After they hand me the $ of course)
Then if they're happy they can go on their merry way.

    • thanks doweyy, I remembered reading about the iphones being fully unlocked a while ago but I wasnt certain.

I will check if I was targeted on one of my accounts.
Otherwise I'll sell it for cash in hand locally :)

Contact Telstra and have them unlock it, as it's an iphone you will need the imei number and it make take a couple of days as Apple need to release the phone too. If it is locked Telstra will charge a fee of $80 if it's been with them less than 2 years

All iPhone 5 models and newer obtained as a part of a plan are already unlocked.

still stuck with iphone 3gs ?

    • iPhones are never carrier locked. It's the same with ones purchased outright or on contract.

      • Some of the very very old ones (3GS) were locked through Telstra. Not any more though.

how much are you selling it? maybe we can do a bargain here =)

    • Trying to sell it locally first. I'll be looking at 1-1.1k

      • Where you from? Can't see your location on your profile.

      • I am also interested.

        • I live in lismore NSW.

Pretty far from most people on ozb

        • @Originality:

          yeh thats too far

  • Meet in a public place. Tell them that they're welcome to check it out after paying, if it's not as described you will refund (they should feel safe doing this if it's a public area…I like doing this in front of a shopping centre or police station, maybe a train station).

Usually this works out fine, but I did have two negative experiences. First one, the guy messages me a few hours after the deal asking what the IMEI number was. Apparently it had been stolen and he needed to report it. I even posted a thread asking if there was any way this could be a scam (I mean, it seemed a bit fishy, but he gave me cash and had access to the IMEI, so…). Gave him the IMEI, never heard back. Second one the guy gets really upset because the phone didn't work (he didn't want to check it out when he bought it). Turns out, someone reported it lost/stolen between the time I got it and he bought it. I had no problem with him returning it, but he was a bit…aggressive I guess? I just turned around and returned it to the seller I bought from on eBay, actually came out ahead (I had sold it for less than I bought it).

It'd be a good idea to have a sim they can borrow to check that it works (yeah, they should have one, but what if they have a micro sim and the phone uses nano?).

Oh, and I use a throw-away number for Gumtree. Just in case you get a crazy/scammer/etc.

these guys will give you $1050 for a 64gb.. we had a good experience with them. you would probably get more selling it privately I guess..

    • can vouch, used them previously as well.

  • The general rule for mobile phones is:
If the phone was purchased as a discounted prepaid phone then it will be locked.
If the phone was provided as part of a plan then it will not be locked.

But for an iPhone X it would have been acquired on a plan.
