Thoughts on The Kogan 4K HDR Smart TV

I’m considering a cheap 4K TV with HDR.

I’m going to hook it up to my Xbox one S and potentially a PlayStation Pro. It seems reasonably full featured, and large for a pretty reasonable price. I normally go a brand name but thought I’d tried budget considering the panels are decent.

This is the one I’m considering:

    Brightness 250cd/m²
    Contrast Ratio 800:1

This two spec makes this TV a joke, 10 year old monitors have better contrast ratio…
You want contrast in the thousands (3000+) and minimum brightness of 400 (preferably above 500) for any meaningful HDR.

I agree that calling it HDR is a joke but at this price range "HDR" gets a 10bit panel which presumably is better than non-HDR tv in that it has less banding.

Quote the opposite, a bad HDR panel can give you severe banding, specially if it cannot communicate HDR with other devices properly. You will end up with 8nput in 8bit and display being 10 bit (assuming it actually is 10bit panel and not just colour dithering) the display needs to assume how to fill in the gap of the missing 2 bit of in other words how to scale 8 bit to 10 bit and then you end up with banding…

I guess my issue is when Samsung and Sony and LG are doing none proper HDR sets there's not much to expect from Kogan, at least with the other brands you have a half decent panel and somewhat usable interface.

I'd personally get a none HDR good panel over a crappy HDR panel

  • thanks for the help guys.

  • Still too new to make a decision at this point.

Life hacker or gizmodo haven't even reviewed it yet.
