Charles Tyrwhitt business shoes

Looking at the CT website, they do have Goodyear welted shoes
Has anyone bought from them and can comment on their quality when compared to Loakes, Cheaneys etc

There seem to be priced $299-349 Made in England
They also have some in the $199 price range, with no mention about where they are made in, I'm assuming Asia.
Loakes have shoes made in India, a fact they don't seem afraid to reveal.

I was thinking of trying a pair of calf leather toe cap Derby shoes, supposedly made in England.
However the description says premium quality suede?
And Lasted in England. Would that be different to Made in England ie part of the manufacturing process possibly overseas?

Appreciate comments if you have first hand knowledge thanks

  • While I don't own any shoes by CT or Cheaney, I can say that the Loake brand differs in manufacturing quality where the 1880 range is at the top. You can't just refer to the name of the brand when making comparisons as they have a few ranges (1880, Design Loake, Loake Shoemaker collection, Loake Lifestyle, Loake L1).

You'd need to provide the link to the actual pair you are considering for anyone to provide you with detailed advice. I'd guess that CT just rebrand shoes by Loake and similar manufacturers at various price points.

Edit: also consider shoes from the Herring website. In most cases, the quality goes up with the price.

That seems to be their priciest

When compared to Loakes Aldwych 1880 which is priced at $405 at pediware but retails here for $499

      https://www.loakeshoes.com.au/collections/loake1880/products…

      • Mentions suede while definitely not suede. Shows "Lasted in England" but just above that shows a logo "Made in England". Shoes are probably fine and probably made by Loake.

Edit: The Loake Aldwych you linked to are not the same as the CT pair.

        • Not the same, was comparing similar price points $349 vs $405 (or $499 here)
Btw would you know what lasted in means?
And do Loakes Australia have sales often? Eg EOFYS

        • @docians:

I believe lasted just means shaping the leather upper over a wooden foot. Or maybe it's designing the wooden foot :-)

I have no idea about Loake Australia sales. I'd avoid them on principle (banning competition from overseas retailers).

        • @kahn:

          Thanks for the info mate.
Been to the Herring website, they can't do Loakes for obvious reasons, so next best option is an equivalent pair of herrings?

        • @docians:
Yeah, sort them by price and that should give you a good idea of the quality. I bought the Herring Piccadilly from them several years ago and they seem to be a respected retailer.

        • @docians:
From the description, it sounds like they're claiming that the shoe was formed on 'lasts' in England. The 'last' is the wooden foot that a shoe is created around. Custom shoe makers will have custom lasts made to the owners foot. Since these are not custom shoes, then they are automatically generic lasts.

As someone who appreciates fine shoes and the craftsmanship that goes into them, in all honesty, I don't really see the difference 'where' a shoe is lasted. Personally, as long as a pair of shoes has all the construction and craftsmanship of a well made shoe, then it's a premium pair then.

        • @tebbybabes:

I've contacted customer support asking them where their leather shoes are made in, for the shoes that does not specify made in England or Portugal on their website. They have replied that they cannot reveal it! Apparently even when you get those shoes it will not state in on the shoe.

Now I've worn Florsheims made in China and India, atleast I know what I am paying for

I have checked websites of Loakes and Cheaneys shoes and none have specified Lasted in England for their British Shoes.

I am wondering if CT gets their shoes Lasted in England and then finished elsewhere overseas. But because they were lasted in England, they can claim Made in England

eg Australian made means the product is substantially transformed in Australia- but not necessarily entirely made in Australia

To quote part of an article which I have read
with voluntary labelling, what is to stop those footwear manufacturers who stitch pre-sewn uppers on to their soles in the UK from tagging their shoes with a self-proclaimed ‘made in Britain’ label?

CT have already copped a fine before
          https://www.smh.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/charles-tyr…

Basically if I am shelling out $350 for a pair of shoes I'd like to know if it was made entirely in England or finished in England. In either case the leather is probably not from England

  • Found an interesting article on the country of make of British Shoes- actually a blog post by Andrew Loake, MD Loake shoes

    Salient points

Approximately 99% of all footwear sold in the UK is now sourced from overseas

Within the EU, there is currently no legal requirement to label goods with their country of origin. Consequently, most brands (including many “English” brands) do not mark their products with the country of origin

In addition to their main factory in Kettering, they have a second factory in India.

if you want to know that you are buying an English-made Goodyear welted shoe, then you can choose anything from our premium “Loake 1880” collection or our mainline “Loake Shoemakers” range, all of which are made in Kettering, here in the heart of Northamptonshire.

Many of our 1880 uppers are made in India, but it’s impossible to say that any shoe uppers are 100% made in England.

The Loake 1880 collection is a fine range of Goodyear welted shoes that are made in England, but it’s not possible to say that all of the components are made here in England

    full blog post here: http://www.loake.co.uk/blog/a-discussion-about-made-in-engla…

Appreciate his honesty here, but if I spend upwards of $500 for a pair of Loakes 1880 made in England, I will not be a 100% certain that part of the shoe was not fashioned in India (as per Loake specifications). No denying here that the Leather is from Europe and not England

Admittedly most of the work is in the Goodyear welting process, but if an 1880 has the upper made in India and the rest of the work done in England would it still qualify as made in England
