Building Surveyor Stages - Your Recommendation Poll

I'm building a new house, friends and family member strongly suggested that I hire a building inspector / Site Surveyor.

They are asking as to what stages I needs them for. I have no clue on this whatsoever.

Just creating this poll to help people like me, with OzBargain opinions as to what they think the stages they would care more.

Your help is highly appreciated

Every stage the builder asks for money, get the inspector to make sure the builder has properly completed what they've asked money for. Simples.

  • Doesn't your building permit say anything about this? O^O

  • Not "recommendations" but "requirements" to get a Certificate of Occupancy are as followed:

    In Victoria:

    • If the slab has Bored Piers, a Piers Inspection
    • Pre Pour/Steel Inspections
    • Frame Inspection
    • Final Inspection

All the other inspections are optional. If you are doing owner builder then I would personally go with 'all of the above.'

If you are going through a builder then you have a right to choose you own bulding surveyor which is a new law which came into effect 1 September 2016

  • There is a difference between the building surveyor and a private building inspector.

You have to have a building surveyor to sign off on stage completion, however they don't really check quality to any great degree.

Building inspector is someone you engage privately to check on the quality of everything vs the relevant standards - everyone I know who as built says is it the best money they spent and a tiny small percentage of the overall cost
