Cheapest why to buy currency (cash)? (AUD----> Singapore Dollars)

Hey everyone,

Just wondering what your thoughts or tips are to get the best value when exchanging currency to travel abroad (to Singapore specifically).

I'm concerting AUD to SGD.

The exchange rate today is around 1 AUD = 0.9540 SGD . (TravelEx)

Get money from an ATM there.

    • there ^ best answer

    • I'd like to echo this - get a Citibank card and withdraw there.

It seems like it'll be expensive or they'll be hidden fees, but they have a very good card and it's very reasonable.

I did this in Middle East and Europe recently without any issues - ATM's relatively easy to find, fees were minimal if at all, currency conversion reasonable etc. etc.

      • The ING Orange Everyday Card would also achieve his wouldn’t it? Given that you have the fees rebated.

Do all ATMs accept the ING Orange Everyday Débit Card?

    • Really? Ok, thank you. I always imagine fees to use ATM overseas is very costly.

Bring cash and exchange over there. It's easy to find a money changer in singapore. otherwise, even the money changer in the airport will have better rates than travelex.

  • change in bugis singapore.
just look for the lines. they have the best rate - sometimes better than interbank.

  • Take AUD50 or AUD100 notes and use the money changers - you will get the i/b mid rate

  • citibank withdrawl

  • Always take AUD to Singapore and exchange to SGD and not the other way round(provided you stick to < 10K AUD) . Don't do it at large forex chains/brands(i.e. travelex) or at the airport. Citybank withdrawal could be another alternative but if you want to get the best deal go to a smallish(doesn't mean dodgy) currency exchange booth(Little India / Bugis) and try out. You can always ask for a better deal over the rate shown on the digital display and if you have a fair bit of cash to exchange you will definitely get it. The counter outside Mustafa's has always worked for me.

New Product - HSBC Global Debit Card Multi Currency includes Singapore Dollars but not sure how good it is. Have the card and it is a Visa Debit instead of MasterCard Debit.

  • ATM overseas is the best. Take some AUD cash, just in case you can't access an atm for the 1st few hours, and need to get a taxi, that way you can exchange at the airport if no atm is available.
