and on a very very tight budget. 2 adults & 3 kids. Any suggestions ? Don't care if backpackers accommodation. Don't want to spoil the kids. If we're going it's to ski. Lift tickets ? Cheapest in some sort of package ?

spoke to a few wholesalers, but they tried to tell me to spend more on accom, which don't want to do.
Guess I can understand, they don't sell or make anything out of basic 2 star accom.
Maybe if you posted details of your budget, whether you own any gear, and whether your budget includes flights you might get decent responses.
Off the bat for NZ you are looking at
Ski Hire
car hire
lift tickets
just accommodation & lifts. Found cheap air ($196 from Gold coast to Auckland return for adults & $136 for kid under 12 on air asia) & 4wd hire ($39/day including chain hire) already.
Would like to spend ideally no more than $150 per night(au dollars not kiwi dollars) but it appears you need to book a package of at least accommodation & lifts, to get a deal on the lift tickets & hire gear.
Just trying to see any way around it, otherwise will pay more for accommodation to save on lifts & hire.
Maybe try some travel or ski websites/blogs/forums
