Select Discounts or Lower Prices Everyday?

Supermarkets at point of discounting 'madness'

“Australian supermarkets have reached a point of discounting "madness", according to the head of Coles, who wants consistently lower prices on key items rather than aisles littered with discount tags…

"Customers are saying they’d like to see the same price every day, every week, and that’s our drive - to lower the price, so you don’t have to think about it," Mr Durkan said on Thursday. "It’s much easier not to have to think about it.”

I’m curious to see where OzBargainers sit. Would you prefer lower prices every day or select discounts each week?

  • they would have to reduce prices quite a bit to get rid of sales

  • Golly, someone has finally twigged people won't buy stuff unless it's 'on sale'.

    Where's my honorary MBA?

    • You can download the Uni of OzB *.pdf from the usual places.

      (Congratulations). :+)

Without even clicking on those I know exactly what they are.

"Bloody idiot customers. We changed our prices to be close to the 'on sale' ones, but now because our stuff is never 'on sale' they think the prices are too high and won't buy anything."

      And/or…

"Bloody idiot customers. We changed our prices to be close to the 'on sale' ones, but now they think we sell cheap crap and won't buy anything."

Man, that honorary MBA from the 'Uni of OzB' is coming in handy.

Everyday prices, all 50% off today's, then no need for the sales or Ozbargain - we all get our lives back

  • They already dropped the prices on a lot of things. Now they never have "sales" on these items, eg. Extra gum 3 pack used to go on sale for $4 but now that is the everyday price and it never goes on sale any more. Makes you wonder how much money they were making before the price cut.

  • Yes

  • So Coles boss reckons Woolies and ALDI are best for customers who don’t find thinking too burdensome.
Nice to know what shopkeepers think of their customers.

  • I love smashing the 50% off bargains with a brain :) Plus I shop at Aldi now because sometimes the quality of their food is absolutely through the bloody roof!

I go for a mix and only buy when it suits me at the lowest price possible (take that you capitalist pig dogs!)

Case in point, look for a supermarket 'special' tag on a really hot item, none on the shelf? Have a feel around the back on 'overflow' of the products either side of that empty shelf, about 50% of the time I find some. Not to mention on the ends of the aisles as well, surprising how many people don't check that either for the same product. They just get attracted to the tags… (but that does benefit me)
