Any Recomendations for a Pressure/Slow/Rice Cooker?

Hey guys.
Our $12 kmart rice cooker died after 5 years and I'm looking to replace it.
We've never owned a pressure or slow cooker before so I'm considering getting a multicooker to replace it.

Does anyone have any recommendations?
How do they go cooking rice? (main use)

I'm looking at the Breville - BPR700BSS - The Fast Slow Pro which has been as low as $230
or the Sunbeam Aviva 6L Multicooker which has been as low as $99.

Thanks

  • Philips HD2137/72 or Philips HD2178/72 seems to be quite good.

    • I have the HD2137. For anyone wondering, the HD2178 is the newer version which is more expensive but has the same capacity and set of functions. The only differences are the touch interface and a stainless steel bowl in addition to the standard non-stick one.

  • Ikea pressure cooker, kmart $10 rice cooker. U cant go wrong.

    • Can a pressure cooker do slow cooking also?

      • A pressure cooker does slow cooking but faster.

        • The point of slow cooking is to tenderise tougher (cheap) meats, pressure cooking won't do that.

        • Pressure cooking just speeds up the process

So you can either cook really fast , or just not so slow

        • -1

          @J5:

          speeds up the process

Yeah, but you need to cook the meat for 30 minutes while everything else only takes 10.

I'm lazy, I don't want to open the cooker halfway though to add the rest of the stuff. I know, what a tough life.

        • @D C:
Clearly missed the point if slow cooking

      • The multi-functions ones do, you need to remember to leave the vent open.

Use the browning function for the meat first, toss everything else in and do the slow cook for 8 hours or whatever. Goes to 'keep warm' once finished like slow cookers do. Capacity is about the same, 5-6 litres.

I've got the $70 Aldi one they occasionally sell, it works fine. I need to get a second one.

I just bought one of these when Myers was having their 20% off ebay sale. It is great. Did lambshanks in it the other day and they were meat dropping off the bone in less than an hour all up. This recipe ends up with a lot of leftover fluid so I used that as a base for the Risotto recipe - no standing and stirring for ages as you drip feed in the fluid. Cleaning it is not too bad as the lid can be unscrewed to enable you to give it a good wash. It is adjustible so you aren't stuck with what recipes it has in store.

Probably best to have a look at Product Review to see other people's experiences, but I'm really impressed.

I haven't been able to work out if it does Yoghurt with the slow cook setting - I bought a Tefal multicook, which I think was not a great idea, because it didn't do the pressure cooker function but it does do Yoghurt and porridge well so, for now, I just have both.

  • Breville - BPR700BSS was on amazon mothers day sale for half price briefly. amazon regularly have appliance sales so if you're not in a rush i'd wait a bit.
