    Windows 10 "S" (for "sucks").

FYI: You can only install programs from the Microsoft store.

    • You can revert that to full Windows easily https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/windows-10-s-upgrade-dead…

    • Wow, really. Isn't literally every consumer going to be really unhappy about that

      • It's aimed at suckers who didn't know.

        • No. It’s aimed at people who want a simple and secure machine. Like a Chromebook or iPad.

        • @PainToad: Those have way better app support than Windows store.

iPad is a completely different market. It's a mobile OS, not a laptop alternative.

Windows 10 S is not near as light and snappy as iOS. Especially with a Celeron.

  • Anyone know how powerful this CPU is?

Seems like a good deal for a PC/tablet use.

    • This processor isn't very powerful at all and the 4GB ram doesn't exactly do any favours. But to be fair $198 is an alright price considering.

Just don't expect anything too flashy.

Review. Notice in review this is a slightly different config with 1080p display. Unfortunately, the Aussie version has a 1366 x 768 one.

Different specs, this doesn't have a 1080p screen.

Read the OP? * Sigh *

    "300 Kilopixel (Front camera)"
I've never seen anything spec'd with this descriptor…interesting…

300 kilopixels just sounds much better on paper than 0.3 megapixels.

      • 300,000 !!!!! pixelsss

  • Unless you really really want a Windows-based laptop, I feel an entry-level Chromebook is a better option. Still great value though!

  • Hi OP, can you please post us more on ultrabooks (under 1k)? I don't know if this laptop is practical for all heavy pc users.

For a very basic computer, something nanna can play her card games on, $200 bucks is good value.

Don't worry about windows 10 S - you can upgrade it to Windows 10 Pro.

When you get it home, do a clean install of windows - it will be balls deep with bloat from acer.

    • With 64GB eMMC, that might be difficult. It needs a lot of GB to play around with during the upgrade process, and keeps old installation files.

      • I managed to upgrade a 32GB toshiba 8" encore, and keep it updated, tho the process is not pretty, and it sometimes likes to sulk for a day or two before accepting a charge and rebooting into the new O.S. after major updates.
It still runs better than it did on Windows 8…

        • 32gb windows pc's should be defined as cruel and unusual torture by the united nations and banned.

        • @mathiex: perfect for kids to be able to type up their homework and not much else like play games.

        • That's impressive. I can't even update my Windows 10 to Anniversary or Creator's updates with my 32GB.

        • @lostn: I did throw in a 32 GB SD card as a permanent "D" drive, formatted HPFS and use that to install programs. You're not missing much - I booted it up to check and found that as I hadn't done a few registry fixes, Microf\soft had thrown on "Netflix" as part of their latest grab-bag of fremium junk that never makes it to my more used systems..

      • Just use an external drive to help through the process.

It's what I did to get my 32GB machine to the latest update. But seriously, 32GB storage on a Windows 10 laptop is a joke. Fills up with almost nothing on there.

nana will love it and if she doest she won’t remember who gave it to her.

you can always say “nana, i got you the i7 fhd note book and should get your inheritance, it’s your other kids that gave you the celeron ….. now let me help you with the xiaomi pen while i help you move your hand to,sign the will”

not sure what reflects our technological placement on the world stage ….. crap nbn (hfc and hybrid) or HN selling these.

I have a similar older Acer that is pretty much the same though with a slightly lower spec CPU. Honestly for the kids computer, this is fine. They can code on Scratch, browse the web, play youtube. At least if they drop it it's not $1000 of laptop breaking, it's sub $200.

  • Wanted to buy an entry level NUC to run home automation software on. If this can run Linux - it may be a good alternative. And no need for UPS =)
