TP-Link AV2000 2-Port Gigabit Passthrough Powerline Starter Kit $99.97 (½ Price) @ EB Games (or $94.05 Officeworks Price Beat)

240

Currently half price in the latest EB Games sale. All TP-Link gear is half price. Some good deals on routers, too.

I got Officeworks to Price Beat my local EB Games. $94.05.

Brought it home, hooked them up straight away, and it's superfast. I have my second Xbox and Smart Tv on ethernet instead of wi-fi now. Working great. So easy.

I particularly like this Powerline adapter because it has two ethernet ports, and more importantly they face down. The latest D-link and Netgear Powerline Adapters have their ethernet ports facing up on the Australian versions. This means the ethernet cables run up your wall and loop down again. Utterly ridiculous. The US versions of the same products face downwards like they are supposed to.

Can concur this is a great product. Just it takes up a whole power switch so essentially you lose one power point

    • Except this has the pass through plug… Unless you are going on width on the wall.

  • What sort of speeds would you typically get from these?

    • Very dependant on wiring and distance, from my experiences around 80-150mbps is the norm. Plenty of review on EOP devices though.

  • I can confirm that these work great with steamlink! Previously had a 500mbs tp-link that had occassional dropouts. No issues with this av2000!

  • Can someone tell me the difference between this unit and the cheaper RE305? https://www.ebgames.com.au/pc-233053-TP-Link-RE305-AC1200-Wi…

I've got decent wifi in my living room, but very weak in second bedroom. If I hook up the RE305 half way between will that likely solve my issue or do I need one of these more expensive systems?

    Thanks!

    • One is wireless signal extender and the other one is ethernet over powerlines. So it depends on what you want.

      • I just want to have a decent wifi signal for phone and laptop in second bedroom to watch netflix. Not sure which system would be better?

        • +2

          Well this isn't wifi?

        • +2

AV2000 is not wifi, it is ethernet. If you use this you would need to have another router or something to convert it to use wifi.
If you get the RE305, this will boost ur wifi signal but whether or not that room gets the speeds you want would depend on how good the signal it receives at the point that you place it.

  • Anyone know the width of these? The TPLink page shows 131×72×42 mm - so I guess 72mm wide? I wouldn't expect that'd be the package dimensions?

Can these Ethernet over power devices be used on powerboards or just directly on the socket themselves? Really interesting question I have always wondered.

    • They recommend to not use them through powerboards

    • +3

Less of a question as to whether you can or whether it's recommended that you don't.

I've ran some old ones through a powerboard/extension cable/both in the past and gotten full speeds without issue.
All warnings and packaging suggests otherwise though.

Thanks hmm.. This is the answer I needed but now the decision is still a tricky one. Need more sources or anecdotes.

        • Yep I have one in a double adapter and one in a power board…. all ok :)

        • @websa: sweet thanks dude for the confirmation this is just what I need to go forward with a few something somethings

  • It costs about $100 per port to get ethernet run in your house

I wouldn't waste your time for half that cost - you'll never get gigabit out of these in the next room, probably 100mbps at best reliably

    • Mine report 1.5Gb pretty regularly. I admit a real ethernet cable would be better, but I rent so that's not an option.

      • That speed doesn't sound right

    • And when you live in a double storey?

      • I live in a 2 storey apartment with two of these linking my upstairs router and downstairs Home Theatre PC. I consistently get over 150mbps. Been really happy with it, more reliable than my wifi thanks to the thick concrete walls. Obviously there are a lot of factors determining your ultimate speed and nothing is ever perfect but I was fully expecting much lower speeds so I was pleasantly surprised.

        • Yeah I had similar in a double story townhouse, worked well. Went to Orbi and later Google Wifi when I started having issues though.

    • Fantastic product.

However, as s3n pointed out, it's unlikely you will get Gigabit speeds from this.
I get 100Mbps to nearly every room.

The connection is strong and stable. I did a short test by transferring a ~4GB file. No dropouts. Constant speeds.

Excellent for Steamlink and Netflix 1080 HD.

  • I get 100Mbps on file transfers a room or two away from a Netcomm NP505 unit I got free with my Foxtel

From what I've read even though they claim 2000Mbps, they never top out more than 100Mbps (or 150Mbps as FuRyZ says above if you're lucky)

That's a far cry from Gigabit (ie. 120 megabytes per second) so just be aware of that is all I'm saying

    • That's some really bad advertising. I wonder why it's advertised like that and didn't deliver anywhere near to the target.. usually the measurements aren't off by more than 50% hah

      • Well 2000Mb with 2 ports is 1000Mb each port

It's probably only 1000Mb per port if you use the same gang plug

As soon as you go a meter or so it drops down exponentially

The noise is a big factor in house wiring - it isn't shielded or anything for communications so the interference requiring greater error correction and retransmission that take up all the bandwidth

  • There is stock in office works - Hunter street and also clarence st stores - 2 each if anyone interested. I just got mine. Online shows zero stock.

  • Officeworks refused to pricematch me, some BS about them not honoring it because EB's is a sale and not standard price.

Pretty sure Officework's price-beat guarantee specifically states that they will honor even sale prices, but eh.. whatevs.
It was more of luxury potential purchase to replace my current adapters than a necessity. Still a bit salty.

  • Is anyone still look for this device? I realised I bought the wrong one… I was after a powerline that includes wifi extension functionality, basically the TPWPA8630. In my haste to buy this I inadvertently thought the TLPA9020P also had wifi. I'm going to try and return it to OW but I reckon they're going to be difficult about it. I already had issues trying to get the damn thing from them. PM me if anyone is interested, I want want to get rid of the thing - happy to also provide receipt. I'm based in Homebush, NSW.

    Cheers,

    Geoff

    • Hi Geoff,

OW has 30 days change of mind policy. So, don’t stress, you’ll be ok. I have returned few products in the past to OW without any issues.

Sone of the items were opened & used.

Just say, it doesn’t fit the purpose or it didn’t work as it’s advertised. Simple..

      Cheers

      • Cheers mate! I did ask the guy when i was in store and he said I can't return it if I've opened it.. I mean its only bloody shrink wrap lol. Will give it a shot tomorrow.

P.S. don't try to price match this think from the store in Ryde. I called them up, they gave me an ok for the price match and said they have it on hold for me. I rocked up an they said they have nothing under my name then also told me there was no stock. I walked to the shelf and grabbed one and tired to get it priced matched. The manager turned around and says they can't match it because it's on 'clearance'. Absolute bloody waste of my time. I ended up getting it through their headoffice anyway.

        • I am getting a new computer sometime end of this month just waiting on last part.

If the WiFi doesn't suffice for my personal needs I might hit you up for the ethernet if you still have it.

BTW does it come with any ethernet cables, I have some but really long ones.

I'm in Sydney though so can't meet up will need postage. I'll let you know if I really need it closer to the end of June or early July.

        • @AlienC: Hey mate, i returned mine last weekend, they didn't kick a fuss. I got the wpa8630. My apartment is long and full of concrete, I now have wifi everywhere. I also got that one price matched with scorptec at officeworks :)

        • How did you get it "through their head office"? Is that a store somewhere or online? I'm looking to get a second set and don't want to have to ring around eb games to source one

        • @nfusion: I rang their 1300 number and they did it through that. Sometimes you have to get lucky. Depending on who you speak to, they may or may not do it for you. They even delivered it to my place because it was above $55

  • Got one price matched at OW Dee Why today… Thanks guys
