How Do You Keep Your Dog Busy and Entertained during Work Hours?

Hey Guys,

I was just wondering how everyone here keeps their dog entertained any busy during work hours…

I give my pup 3 Kong Toys and plenty of other toys, though it seems like its just not enough .. He gets bored too easily and gets all destructive.

I was wondering what everyone here does?

Thanks :)

Try dividing the toys into 3 different batches and rotate so there is interesting stuff.

if they are a pup literally and need something to chew for teeth then get them some whole raw bones.

Make sure there is an good outdoor bed/kennel - if they use it.

Also lots of exercise when you are home.

    • Dividing his toy is a great idea! Thanks so much for that :)

  • What sort of dog ? Have you got a back yard ?

You might have to start working from home (if you can) for a few months while he gets settled.

Get up early and take him for a long walk so he’s tired.

Get a buster cube and fill it with treats. Don’t leave out fluffy toys or his bed because otherwise he will find entertainment in destroying them.

Maybe also see if you can find a walker. Or someone to play with him. It’s expensive yes but so are toys and redoing your garden.

    • Hi there - hes a corgi

Buster cube - great idea i will get one :)

My parents come and check on him once a day and bring him outside to play :)

      Thanks x

May not be an option if you don't have the space, but I got a second dog, and they are much more comfortable together, than one was alone.

Is there a linear relationship between dog happiness and number of other dogs? Maybe should invest in another pair

      I second that!

This bugger is the reason I setup a home office:

      • Omg what a cutie! I wish i could work from home and look after my furson haha.

Will you be uploading more photos? I would love to follow your furry child :)

        • Thank you :)

I might be more active on Instagram and put photos of her there :) there is not a day when she’s not modelling for me haha

    • Yup i think theres a high chance thats right.

I am thinking about another corgi so they can entertain each other.. But i heard its better to get one which hes a bit older..so the little one can learn off the older dog :)

I give my dog all my plants to destroy, holes to dig in my garden, and clean spots on the carpet to go to the toilet /s

I've got two dogs, one of which is 1y2-3m. It's part Jack Russel, which partially explains it, but we've got toys galore and a second dog to play with, but often I still come home to plants dug up and dragged through the house and things chewed. $700 worth of headphones, $200 worth of thongs and shoes, he loves the expensive things.

We've tried walking them before we leave, leaving them kong toys and all sorts, none of which has helped significantly.

I think for us it's just a phase to get used to until they're 1.5-2yrs, and blocking off / excluding areas that he can get to until he settles down.

    • I feel for you. My difference is i only have 1 furson.. He's bitten my brand new havinanas, a fan cord .. So far… I've only had him for 1 month -_-.

Today he managed to escape his pen and knock down a baby gate :(.

I'm bracing myself to the damage when i gry home.

What are you using to block your place? Im using baby gates but i feel like i need more things haha

Yeh i think it could be a phrase but im hoping someone here has a good solution. Someone from the above comment said - buster cube? Maybe try that. I'm going to get one!

All the best with your furchildren x

      • Yeah, I use a baby gate to block off half the house. But the issue for me is that I still need them to access the backyard.

In the backyard, I have the expandable bamboo stuff from Bunnings, which I put around the place to keep him out of planter beds.

        Looks like:
        https://www.bunnings.com.au/garden-trend-900-x-1800mm-bamboo…

Otherwise, it's just a game of catch up, blocking off parts that I don't think he'll destroy until he does.

I've even chopped up bamboo stakes and stuck them around my pot plants to keep him out of them.

I'm even thinking of sectioning off half my backyard… Haha I cannot wait until he calms down.

    Another dog

  • I take my dog for a 5KM run pretty much every morning, I give her 3 toys all with different characteristics one of those is a stuffed toy that she is "allowed" to basically make fluff go everywhere but most importantly I switch the toys all the time I have a stash of about 20. Also, I use two auto feeders with treats.. one has a kong filled with something and the other is whatever stinky/tasty treat.

    I did consider a Furbo (https://shopus.furbo.com/)

    • I second the morning exercise. I walk my dog for an hour every morning from 6 am til 7 am, rain, hail or shine.

When I don't then the dog makes me pay in some form of destructive manner.

    • 5Kms omg. Dedication.

Yup ive got more than 30 toys for him in counting -_-

May i ask you which automatic feeder you have?

Yup I'm also considering furbo x

  • You'll need to provide us with more details for us to be able to provide accurate advice. For example:
    * How old is your puppy?
    * Does he have access to the yard while you're out?
    * How long are you out for during the day?

I used to give my dog an hours walk (4-5km) in the morning before I head off to work. He knows he'll get another walk when I get home and is generally happy to snooze at home till I return. This was when he was younger. Now that he's older, I've shorten the duration of the walks.

Assuming cost is not an issue, doggy daycare might be an option you could look into as well. This will give your dog the opportunity to socialise with other dogs which is beneficial. My dog is usually pretty tired from a day at daycare and is more than happy just to sleep in the next day. So that not only helps with the day, but the day after as well. Make sure you bring your dog to a reputable daycare though.

    • Hi there,

      Thanks for your reply :)

      • How old is your puppy? CORGI
      • Does he have access to the yard while you're out? NO
      • How long are you out for during the day? at least 8-9 hours

      cheers x

      • How old is he? Mine is a Corgi too. You mentioned you've only had him for 1 month, so I assume he's pretty young. If that's the case, walking him for long distances is not a good option. You want to do walks 2-3 times a day over short distances instead to not overexert his growing bones.

You mentioned your parents visits during the day. Would it be an option to drop him off during the day with your parents and pick him up when you finish work?

        • Yay another corgi owner.

          He's 4 months now :)

Yeh hes a bit too young for long walks.. He ends up sniffing more than walking haha.. But we try to take him out for a small walk up the road.

We also bring him to the dog park twice on the weekend to tire him out.

My parents cant. They only come and check/clean/give him treats in the afternoon.

Great, you don't have a dog, why comment? If your neighbour's dogs bark why would you assume your own dog would too, would you not train it? Assuming all dogs would kill a baby is moronic, and why would the dog even be living in the house to 'stink' it up in the first place? Which they don't do unless you're a slob yourself by the way. Have you ever even met a dog? Because it sounds like you haven't. Congrats on managing to post a comment which is both impressively stupid and irrelevant on multiple levels.

Yes I have met a dog, every one of my friends that have one have a dog smell all through the house. If you own a dog you get used to it and can't smell it. Try going on holiday for six months or so while a pet sitter continues to let the dogs live in the house - you'll smell it after you get back. My parent's Maremma, who was the only dog I knew who I really liked (she comes when she is called, will wait till you ask her to come over and get a pat instead of being in your face and then go away again when you tell her, knows lots of commands and generally does what she is told, and is very pretty with her fluffy blond hair and liquid brown eyes) - killed another dog a couple of months ago. Picked it up in her mouth and shook it until its back broke, and kept biting it after that. Before that, I viewed dogs as not really my cup of tea but I understood why people liked them (fun to train them, go running with them, play with them - all things cats can't do). Ally was the one shining example of how dogs can be OK. Afterwards, I realised you can't trust a single one of the evil blighters. Even a beautiful, well-trained family dog that receives all the socialising, training and love you can give a dog is still an unpredictable killing machine.

        Not their first.

"He gets bored too easily and gets all destructive."

Maybe he has an anxiety disorder. Might be eligible for medicinal marijuana or a companion animal

    • +1

Hahahaha imagine if it was legal for pets lol

Yeh a companion animal sounds good.. But its a bit too early. I heard that its better to get one when 1 is a bit older :)

    • Hehe a Willie Nelson dog……..Dog collar worn like a bandana, singing 'On the Road Again'……"I cain't wait to sniff some A..h…s with my friends… I cain't wait to get on the road agen".

How Do You Keep Your Dog Busy and Entertained during Work Hours?

I always keep my dog busy during work hours, but whether he is entertained or not is not my concern. As long as he gets the work done.

  • Our dog is almost 3 now and we definitely had issues with separation anxiety/destroying stuff because he was bored!

He was in a pen on the tiles in the family room/kitchen before he was fully toilet trained and then graduated to our bathroom (its massive!) so he couldn’t destroy the rest of the house! Now he has his pick of the family room, dining area, kitchen (and often the rest of the house when I forget to close the hallway door).

We take him for a 20-30 minute walk every morning (you shouldn’t be taking your corgi for an hour walk yet either, he’s too little and his bones are still developing) and a 30-60 minute walk every evening- that seems to help to tire him out. And I wouldn’t recommend leaving him alone with a bone- he’s still got his baby teeth so might do some damage, and there’s a risk of choking, I would always make sure I’m around if we give our dog a bone.

He might be chewing because he’s teething and his mouth hurts. We tried frozen face washers to give his gums some relief. Our dog also loved nylabones when he was little and would chew on them for hours- they have puppy varieties and make sure you throw them out when they get small enough to be a choking hazard.

I also think developing a routine helps. Our dog knows when we’re getting ready for work and sulks a bit- gives us the “puppy dog” eyes. But when we’re about to leave we tell him to go on his bed and he’s excited beucase he knows a treat is coming (usually a Kong filled with treats or a greenie). When he was little we used to leave the radio on low and put a tshirt one of us had worn to bed/the day before into his bed. I also read that it’s a good idea to start small, leave him and go outside for 5 minutes, then 15 minutes etc etc until you can build up to him being okay when you leave for hours.

    Good luck!

    • Haha yup he was in a pen and today we have decided to give him our whole kitchen as he's managed to escape twice an hour after we've left for work -_-..

Yeh we only take him for a 10 minute walk up the road as he sniffs more than walks.

Is there a nylanbone brand you can recommend? I had a look at them and i noticed that they don't recommend it for dogs under 6months.

Yup we do keep a radio on during work hours, ticking clock on top of his crate and a light which switches on after 5pm so its not dark for him.

      Thanks for the reply xx

      • We liked the “nylabone” brand (we used a few others and they didn’t seem as good as the proper nylabones) and they have a specific puppy range. Ozbargain won’t let me post an actual link to a listing, but there’s a few sellers on eBay selling the puppy value packs, just check what size is right on nylabone’s website. My gran’s corgi has just passed away at 15 and she was the one who got me onto nylabones for our Westie- once he had things to chew on he stopped attacking chair legs!!!

It’s also worth investing in a few puzzle balls/treat balls so they have to work for it and tire their little brains out. We have a Kong wobbler too and our Westie loves bashing it around to get his treats!

It could be good if your parents could take him for a short walk too or play some games when they see him during the day, hopefully if he’s tired he won’t be as destructive!

Puppy Pre-school is extremely important. Contact them regarding age and needles needed before attending. Not only does it get your dog socialized from a young age, but you both will learn a lot. Often it is the owner who has caused bad traits in their dog.
And remember, when you take your dog for a walk, it is his time. Don't try to walk fast, let him enjoy wandering around, peeing on things, smelling things etc etc. The walk is intended to break up his boredom, and not for your fitness. If you want a fitness walk, then you should do it separately.

    • Hi there!

Yup hes finished puppy preschool. We are looking to take him to obedience school once he turns 4.5 months old.

He goes to the dog park twice on the weekend and gets lots of playtime.

      Hahaha yup that's true :)

Puppies like to destroy stuff. They usually grow out of it with casual training.
Nothing is wrong with your dog, not separation anxiety and doesn't need treatment.
    This is normal puppy behaviour.
