Getting Back into Consoles - What Sales to Look out for / Where to Get Good Deals? [Switch]

Hi all,

Looking to get back into console gaming after a long stint away (~2006).
Where should I be looking in terms of sales/stores/online stores for good deals?
I am under no time pressure, and looking at getting a Nintendo Switch, if that helps.

I am just looking for general advice, for instance:
- Do JB Hifi and EB Games ever have better sales than 20% off storewide? Do they do anything for EOFY, Christmas, and over the Black Friday period?
- Are these the best Aussie brick and mortar stores in terms of variety and prices?
- What are some good online stores (besides eBay, AmazonAU) and how good do their sales get? I see 20% off coupons / 20% selected stores storewide which seem pretty good.
- Seems like the other big box retailers like Kmart, BigW, Target have good deals every once in a while - worth checking in for good deals going into the EOFY period?

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • I've had a couple years' experience looking at the deals for Xbox One. Cheapest was buying it from eBay with a discount code.

In terms of the Switch, don't expect much. Set up a search alert for "Nintendo Switch' and wait until there's something as good or better than previous. There was a deal posted the other day of $369-ish.

I would recommend jumping into it ASAP, love my switch.

  • +2

Maybe consider doing the back catalog of PS3 and 360 games for next to nothing?

    • Would it be better to buy a PS3 or buy a cheap ps4? I wanna buy KH3 when that comes out, but I'm 90% sure the ps3 line up was more than enough for me.

  • Best deal right now I found is on Amazon. The Switch is $378 with the "AMAZON20" coupon, then you can also apply the cash rewards for another 5% cash back making it around $360

  • Yeah, Amazon do still tend to be the best place to get it.
Now that there's an offcial Amazon Australia, delivery is alot better too, as they deliver from Australian fulfillment centers instead of having to be shipped all the way over from the us. (so less customs nightmares aswell)

worth comparing prices though still, as sometimes even when you pay more for delivery, what the total bottom line is at the end of it can still vary.
(I often compare a few of the amazons, and then calculate the full price delivered after running the cost through a currency converter, like xe.

The results can often be surprising.

For speed of delivery though, it's always still faster from same country to same country.

Here are the different switches in Amazon Australia:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01LTHP2ZK (grey joycon version)
https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01MUAGZ49 (blue & red joycon version)

At the moment it does seem that Amazon Australia is coming out cheaper than Amazon USA anyway (even before you've factored in things for delivery), so that's what I'd recommend for these at the moment.

  • Hi all,

Thank you for your comments and help. I ended up getting a Switch through AmazonAU (using a recent Ozbargain deal with AMAZON20 and NAB credit card 10% cashback), and got a preowned Wii from EB Games ($48) for kicks as well.

    • You're welcome! Glad you found it useful! Wish I had the code though back when I bought mine! I paid full price for it back when it first came out last year! Well worth every penny though. -The Switch is awesome! Which games are you gonna be playing on yours first when you get it?

      • BOTW, Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart so far! What about yourself?

    • Try to track down Resident Evil 4 on the Wii. It was one of my favourite gaming experiences. The motion controls really made the game better.
