UberEATS: So Many Restaurants Leaving

I have been an avid user of UberEats over the past 12 months mainly because it is so much faster than Menulog as the restaurant is not the one doing the delivery.
over the past 2 weeks at least 15 places we have order from regularly have left the program, we literally have Maccas and like one kebab joint left in our area now.

A few mates in other areas have noticed it too
Was wondering if any OzBarginers have seen the same trend.

I guess them taking 35% and not allowing you to charge extra (unless you are Macca's) has taken its toll on a lot of places.

  • What did people do before UberEats and its ilk? Go out and pick up your order? Why can't people do that today? It's not like life has radically changed and people are far busier today than they were 2 years ago.

They don't have to talk to anyone to order the food. Just tap the app.

Then they can get the food they want and answer the door in their PJ's/nightie/birthday suit. All the while, they are usually under the influence of an unknown substance and/or have just worked up an appetite if you catch my drift!

I see this all the time…

I've always wanted to answer the door in my birthday suit. I didn't think people actually did it. Thanks, I'm going to try this next time.

  • Seems like many eateries are quitting on mealpal as well

  • Always use Menulog - like others have said before - i am sick of putting aussie companies out of business by sending the money offshore without paying tax.

    • Uhh, the profit that Menulog makes is sent offshore to its foreign parent company - it's not Australian owned. I don't think the business proposition for Menulog is much different either… Menulog takes an 18% cut of the order, and they don't pay for the delivery driver.

      • Guy above said Menulog takes 10%.

        • Menulog actually used to charge an original 1.5% commission on all purchases, and apparently some old customers are still on that rate. That percentage has increased dramatically since Just Eat purchased them out and Menulog acquired EatNow… New customers can pay anywhere between 15% - 18% unless they're some large chain.

    • Menulog is owned by the UK Company 'Just Eat' and is making a transition to the 'Just Eat' business over the coming weeks/months. :)

—> Seems like I didnt read the second pages comments before replying.
MenuLog are always adjusting rates and contracts depending on when sign up was completed

  • $750 start up fee +35%, unless those charge $30 per dish, not many can afford.

  • They might be getting poached by cold calling from other food delivery companies, offering incentives or a better deal, for the restaurants and/or drivers to switch away from Uber.
It certainly hasn't been the case as yet where i am, but we only have 1 ride sharing service, and uber eats is only fairly new here.
if there are places you previously ordered from, now removed from Uber eats, it would take you all of 5 seconds to google the restaurant phone number, call them up and ask who does their deliveries now And comment on how nice their food was, while you're on the phone, brighten up their day :)

I ride for UberEats, and it goes both ways, personally I have a super shit time with Restaurants and people not having adequate delivery instructions moreso than UberEats or the app (which has it's own negatives such as not showing the property addresses properly on the map). This is probably because I can actually ride a bike (I've had UberEats orders delivered via bike that are slower than I walk…)

Half the time I get stuck waiting at restaurants as they put the call out for deliveries super early and I have to wait 10-20 minutes for them to make the food, longer if its more than one order. I had one case the other day where a restaurant told me twice that the order was only a few minutes away and it turned out that the twat behind the bar didn't even get the kitchen to start cooking the order.
At least in this case the food is usually guaranteed to be warm when I pick it up. Some restaurants don't have the correct facilities to keep the food warm while they wait for it to be picked up

The app is also difficult as it prompts you to pick up an order x minutes away, but that isn't always the correct estimation, sometimes it a lot longer or shorter and hence we wait at the restaurants for ages, or the restaurants don't start cooking the food until we arrive and hence I have to wait 10/20+ minutes without pay. Which itself snowballs to less delivery guys around and other restaurants having to wait for drivers.

As for missing items in orders, a lot of restaurants staple the bags shut and we can't double check (or the app doesn't list a drink if it's a combo for example), so we have to deal with that when delivering as well.

Yes Uber doesn't pay adequately but its flexible work, and if it helps me pay for the bills around a hectic uni schedule I don't have too much of a problem.

I think Ubereats will never be good enough as there are too many variables that can go wrong from start to finish. There is no guarantee that your food will arrive in a timely manner and thats a fact that you have to live with.

Never used UberEats and never will.

With all the comments suggesting problems with the UE platform and not the restaurant, what if a more transparent service were to surface?
For example an app that would list all the contacts of people looking for a quick buck in a 5km radius?
You could call them up independently and know who is doing the order/delivery. And if you like them maybe you could bookmark them and make them your 'trusted' deliveryboy.

I'm interested in making apps like these, and I think I have a lightbulb over my head for this one. What do you guys think?

    • How would you charge the delivery and the shop?

      • hahahaha i'll think about that when if there are enough people interested I guess. I think for the delivery the app would be a 3rd party for the person to pay and for the deliverer to receive payment.

If it can run fully automated the deliverer can set their own rates on the fly and key it into the app after an agreed price with the person making the order?

That's how it's going in my mind anyway.

edit: and we'll take a low cut like 5% of the agreed price

    • Its called Airtasker and a LOT of people use it to get people to go get them food :P

      • hahah that went over the top of my head completely. Would you use an app exclusively for food though? I mean apart from the coupons, wheres the appeal of making an Ubereats?

    • For example an app that would list all the contacts of people looking for a quick buck in a 5km radius?

Besides AirTasker as jimbobaus mentioned, that's also the original premise for Uber. "Hey, if you're driving in that direction anyway…"

      • yeah… hmmm guess it wont work then

  • Use Deliveroo or Foodora.

  • 3rd party delivery driver companies are ruining the industry in it's entirety, so many people have lost their job or are now doing UE delivery for less money and working much more to make up for it.
It's causing a major struggle for a lot of people unfortunately

Oh and aside from this, they're making pedestrian areas more dangerous by taking shortcuts on their mopeds through pedestrian only areas, ignoring signs at the walkway into my apartment complex which says no motorbikes, and general poor driving skills of these drivers on the roads, they are a nuisance.

  • Just bear in mind Ubereats charges 3 fees

    Charges to you

    1) Delivery fee
    2) Menu per item fee (so each item for me is about 50 cents to 1 dollar higher on the menu as opposed to the restaurants in store).

    Charge to restaurant
    3) 30-35% commission

    • 4) 30-35% commission charge to the driver

      • Haha Jesus forgot about that! So quadruple dipping!

This is why I use Didi and ola now instead of uber (for lifts).
