  • You won't need a car unless you want to drive the Great Ocean Road. Shopping, dining, and attractions are all generally within the confines of the CBD and nearby areas. If you know what attractions you want, you can try buying some entertainment book vouchers from EBAY.

    • or someone from ozbargain can give you some for free/for a lower price than the ones on ebay, just ask around tytran

    • I think the Great Ocean Road is a must visit.

  • I know its very touristy, but have a look at the lonley planet series: http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781741048629/Melbourne…

I think they have a free iphone app

Hook turn is only in the city - so you're unlikely to encounter more than one of them as you make your way out. Or, alternatively, take a train/tram to a suburb and rent the car from there.

If you're into the creepy, I've heard good things about the ghost tour of the old Melbourne jail (requires booking ahead). A friend of mine said the immigration museum was surprisingly interesting.

Lygon St Carlton is good for coffee and don't miss the dumplings on Tattersalls Lane, Chinatown. If it's sunny, I like to grab a baguette from Degraves St then walking along the Yarra.

There's an interesting exhibition at ACMI on Disney animation. While you're there, the NGV Fed Square (Ian Potter Gallery) has a good collection.

Shopping: for seconds, there's Bridge Rd (and far too many DFOs). Also, Brunswick St has some really beautiful clothes, shoes and Jewellery. Chadstone is the biggest shopping centre, but is hard to get to via public transport.

Day trips (will probably require either a car or a tour):
If you've got enough time, the Great Ocean Road is worth the trip.
Mornington Peninsula is great for wine, food and the outdoors. While you're there, check to see if there are any markets (http://www.craftmarkets.com.au) - the Red Hill and Mornington Markets are great. I think Arthur's Seat has reopened. If it's a warm day, you could also investigate one of the dolphin or seal boats for an afternoon cruise.
Dandenongs are a beautiful drive and you can then visit Miss Marples for the traditional afternoon tea or lunch. Don't forget to go early to put your name down, then explore the nearby shops while you wait. There's less of a crowd on weekdays. There are many gardens and walks, in particular William Ricketts Sanctuary. http://www.visitvictoria.com/displayobject.cfm/objectid.0006…
Finally, the Yarra Valley wineries are definitely worth a visit. Domain Chandon is a great place for a bite, too.
