Honda Accord Power Steering Hose Leaking - Recondition or Buy New?

Hi All -

I have a 2005 Honda Accord VTI 2.4l which has done 150k kms. The power steering hose started leaking recently and the mechanic quoted $700(parts+labour) for replacing the hose. One of the Repco store guys suggested getting it reconditioned at ENZED. Spoke to these guys, and they will charge $180 for reconditioning and will provide 6 months warranty. However, they need the hose to be taken off the car as they don't do it. So I will have to use a mechanic to get the hose removed and then re-installed once it has been reconditioned.
Should I get a new hose installed or go through this exercise of getting it reconditioned? I haven't yet spoken to a mechanic about their labour charges for taking it off and putting it back in.

Are there any recommended places for getting the hose reconditioned/repaired which will do it end to end?

Thanks for your help.

    no need power steering

    use your muscle

  • Ask Enzed to provide a new hose. Otherwise repco and find someone to install.

Get a new one and get your local mechanic to install it. Otherwise if you're brave enough to DIY it, there's a lot of youtube videos showing how to replace it.

  • Get a quote from a local mechanic and see how much they charge for removal and fitment.

I reckon it wont be more than $150 in labour.

If that is the case, a reco is worth it as I purchased a reco hose from Enzed (fuel line hose for a Porsche) for a fraction of the cost. It was a good replacement.

The only down side is that if the hose does burst/play-up, the mechanic will charge you labour again as they will not warrant it.
Also you might not be able to drive and it has to be towed (regardless of new/reco)

That's the risk you have to take.
    Otherwise, get new.

    Cheers

'Reconditioning'? Sounds like code for duct taping over the split.

  • I believe parts from overseas may be cheap[er].
    From US etc?

W'Pool should be able to advise!
Perhaps patch now - with later replacement by the correct hose shipped from overseas?

  • Thanks for your suggestions

  • find the exact part number
    whack it in to ebay.
    buy from china.
    replace

have seen this video about issues with the o-ring on the hose?

  • I have never seen a reconditioned hose for any Honda OEM PS style hydraulic system in last 40 years, hoses are a throw away item yet some fitting are reusable. Mass production OEM and re-manufactured as new hose HP fittings are crimped one use only and the hose is throw away once used, shaped, aged and or faulty. I can assume the LP hose is not your concern.
So what do you recondition? Or is it just a wording thing you are using?

There are reusable fittings for some hydraulic systems and they may or may not be available for your particular installation/model. Hose for PS is generic and off the roll on the shelf. Aftermarket hose makers are the most economical for a new/replacement hose, as they will have new hose and either designated reusable fittings or OEM equivalent crimp HP style fittings to suit your Honda.

You upper numbers suggest Genuine parts and possibly include a flush, OEM oil, filter and decent degrease afterwards, where the lower numbers sound very aftermarket and not including the necessary warrant/quality extras and exact labour charges.

Simply shop around for the most economical replacement and fitting, including a system flush and new oil. Or you will will most likely suffer more than the original $700 when anything but a new hose fails prematurely.

Warning. All hydraulic systems have potentially high safety risk if the right circumstances exist.
Yes, a pin hole jet of oil will penetrate your skin and can be a major health risk, can blind you and can be fatal.
Oil sprayed in an engine bay is a serious fire risk. A small failure now can become a major fail at any moment if you are still running this vehicle, so park it and tow to repairer.

    • Thanks for that. 'Reconditioned' was the word that Enzed guys used, which I assumed was synonymous with a repair in this context. Having said that, I have decided to buy an aftermarket from eBay or Amazon US and have a mechanic fit it here.

  • Get a new one. With hydraulic hoses, they can be very dangerous with the high pressures involved. Why muck around?

    Shop around for different mechanics.

  • Go to super cheap auto get the part there’s they have a diagram so either the top or bottom hose

    • PS hoses come in HP or LP, not top or bottom. Are you thinking radiator?

  • I am driving 2004… had same issue…
Go to a honda wrecker and ask them to fit it for you. It cost me less than $200.
