Budget Hot Hatch Insurance Prices

Looking to upgrade my Integra Type S to a budget hot hatch. I'm looking to spend up to 25k.

Needs are:

Five door hatchback
turbo or high performing NA
Manual
reliable

I was looking at the Subaru WRX G3 hatches 07-13 but the insurance prices for a 25yo with no claim history is ridiculous. NRMA quoted me $2600. AAMI was much better at $1700 but still quite pricey. I want to spend less than $1500 on insurance, the lower the better.

What are some other options for hot hatches that won't have a crazy insurance premium?

Insurance on my XR5 turbo was reasonable. Also look at Megane RS, and Golf GTI of that era.

    • Megane RS great everything but sucky interior.

GTI a sedated version of the RS and no LSD without PP, but much nicer interior.

      Both great cars.

Its not possible to get a under 1.5k, especially at your age. I'm an old dude and insurance for my AMG A45 costs 1.2k.

  • Certain older Subaru liberties are comparable in size/specs of a WRX, maybe get a quote for them?

  • Fiat abarth?

  • you could pick up an Hyundai i30 SR with really low ks for around that. Many are picking up brand new 2018 SR for 28k drive away

i30 SR is a nice car, but lacks the performance of a "hot hatch" in todays market.
i30 N definatly is a hot hatch but is double the OPs budget

    What about a Mk6 Volkswagen GOLF R?

I recently purchased one for under 25k under 60,000 KM's. They are quick stock, have a large community for tuning (if that's up your alley) and are very reliable.

Insurance through Shannons was just over 1200 a year for full comprehensive as a 22 year old driver with no previous claims.

    • and are very reliable.

Was it the Mk6's fitted with DCT that sparked the class action against VAG?

      • As far as I'm aware the DSG boxes are quite reliable if serviced at the recommended interval.

I've read some shocking stories about them on forums but this really happens with almost any model of car.

As for the engine reliability it's a 2.0TSI which is in a wide range of VAG vehicles, only big issue that pops up is the timing chain tensioner failure. Yet again if covered in regular maintenance it's no issue.

        • sounds very optimistic

          until you experienced it yourself

Not the wet DCT found in the Golf R/GTI. Dry 7 speed DSG had issues.

  • b16b ek9 type R

    • K20 ED9 CRX
      Game over.

      • SW EP7 BB8
        I win.

  • Get a quote from Shannon's if you think you fit the car enthusiast bill. I find them very competitive and I'm in the 25-30 year old bracket. I was surprised to learn that 30 is the new 25 with some insurers when it comes to 'performance' vehicles.

Edit: also take a Mazda 3 MPS for a spin, either the BK or if you want newer the BL - they're very understated and a heap of fun if you don't mind wrangling some torque steer!

30 is definitely the new 25, in Melbourne at the very least. I recently moved back from Adelaide to Melbourne, and was surprised there were a few insurers that would not even consider insuring me as I am under 30 and own a vehicle that is categorize as a performance vehicle.

  • a 25yo

purchase the policy in your parents name and include 25 year old drivers to the policy.

  • You could always TRY Coles Insurance, just don't expect them to come good on a not at fault accident (hit & run parked car with NUMEROUS Witnesses & caught by police) with my zero accident history! Which reminds me, I've got to get onto the Insurance Council/Ombudsman!

  • Paid $2000 on my first year with Bingle. Second year went down to $1500
    24 y/o Male and 2009 WRX STI

  • Definately test a Renault Megane RS265 3 door coupe. 195kw 360nm 0-100 6sec 6speed 4cyl 3lt turbo. From 2013 should still be in your budget with negotiations. Get the RedBull RB8 version. Only 120 in Aus. Recaro seats. Front rear sensors, rear camera, Xenon adaptive hd, led drl. Mech lsd, rs2.0 monitor and touch nav.

Also try using relatives address as garaged location for cheaper insurance as premium based on area you live.
