Is this too good to be true? This covers labour cost only (ie. excluding parts and oil).

    • $900 what…?

Catch will probably sound like this "You need to replace the following parts and these are our prices".

      • I took up the $79 Suttons Rosebery service package (2 months back) and I must say that I'm very happy with the service. I had my car served at East Sydney workshop and I'm still utilising the free cash wash every week at Rosebery which expires in May 2011.

        • Hence they excluded Rozelle from this offer ;) (if I got the geo right) "at Auto Tech Wynyard and World Square ONLY. Not valid at Rozelle".

Disclaimer maybe I did oh well we will never outsmart mechanics when it comes to their business. Thats how they make a living.

        • is it true it is just a drive thru car wash, done by the big machine?

i've heard from a friend that they dont even vaccuum inside of the car very well and dont even dry the car.

        • It's similar to a car wash machine at Shell but they do a quick (not necessarily a thorough) vaccum of the interior prior to the wash. It is machine blow dry, just like those at Shell stations. Wheels don't get scrubbed properly and no tyre shine. Despite this, it's good enough for me. I don't need showroom quality as I park in the open under direct sunlight/rain everyday.

      • You can always decline what they suggest you to get done or simply take it elsewhere to get it done if it's indeed required.

    Sounds unbelievable to me.
    ===Edit===
I reckon this is where the profits are, and I will leave it because something is totally out of my control.

Please note you will be required to pay for all parts and oils used in these services

Parts and oils must be supplied by Auto Tech

Customers will be called before any additional parts or repairs are carried out

Parts and oils must be supplied by Auto Tech

i don't know many garages that let you supply your own parts and oil…

      • +1

I've previously supplied my own oil at World Square. That's pretty much where the good experience stops. My bad experience was when I had problems with my aircond and their repair quote was over $2k after inspecting my car thoroughly. I got it done at Burwood Ultratune for $450.

If a garage isn't letting you supply your own oil, they aren't worth going to.

I don't when I go to Audvolks in Melbourne, but thats because they are a super high quality place. Other places/cars I've had I usually get my preferred oil on special from supercheap and save a bucketload that way. In fact, I think in Penrite Oil's advertising campaign, James Brayshaw said to buy it, take it in with you when you get your car serviced and ask to see the mpty bottle afterwards.

Of course they could always just pour it down the drain, but nonetheless you're well entitled to do it under a general service (not here obviously, as it is in the terms and conditions).

Most bulk chains are going to offer cheap assessments and overpriced fixes for things that may not be problems. Your best bet is to find a reputable local garage who values your business and won't rip you off, so that you come back again and again.

        • I do the same, our car requires Mobil1 0W40, ie. the really expensive stuff in the M1 range. I buy it in bulk 20 litre cubes, and take it in with me in the boot.

Now, whether or not they shove castrol GTX into my car, and drain the 7.5l of M1 from the cube for themselves is another matter entirely! I mean, that's $100 worth of oil up for grabs.

      • Most of them do allow it, its either that, or you go somewhere else, simple.

        • Agreed! I deliberately found a mechanic that lets me bring my own bits in (specifically I always bring in my own oil, and larger parts like shocks etc which they tend to always overcharge you with)

Man, sounds too good to be true. My experience told me that when s.th so incredible cheap like this I'm better stay away from it. But still a very good post.

  • I had experience with these type of deals before. Whilst it will make it cheaper, it's definitely the parts and oil that will inflate cost.

Having said that, it's not that bad… I think the last time I put it in for a minor service, I got charged $50 for oil and filter and one or two minor parts and labour was free. But then I looked up on the board and minor service was $80 bucks so I guess I saved $30.

  • Tempting proposition but I am very skeptical about the service quality and up selling of parts and other maintenance related necessities once they get you in.

But if this deal had the free muffin I might've been interested ;)

  • I wonder if they will let you park the car there for the day just to get the pink slips done. Get it done twice plus the free parking then you've got your $79 back.

They will need to list out what's being done in the minor and major services too…I can't dig that out from their website.

    • +1

I think pink slip inspection deserves a whole separate discussion. Some will throw in a free inspection when you have a service done. I've been to one local workshop who signed-off and charged me $30 (or thereabouts) without even switching my car engine on. I'm still perplexed as to how he could produce the detailed brake test result.

      • Plenty of "inspection" stations just give the brake tester a shake.

      • IMHO pink slip is a bit of a scam anyway given we're the only state (AFAIK) that needs to get it done every damn year. Everywhere else only needs to be done when the ownership is being transferred and don't muck around like they do here in NSW.

They do a visual check (walk around the car) then play with the lights, shake the steering a bit then do a road test with the brake analyser on board but that's questionable :D

  • Scoopon REP….any similar deal in SA?

  • Without knowing the full cost of each service I need to pay, I can't give this a +ve. Granted, if I put my car in and Auto Tech says it's going to cost 80 bucks for filter and oil, not much of a deal.

  • I am still suspecting that they did something to my car the last time I got it there for service. My car was all fine when I first test driven it before purchase. After bringing it there for service, I'm hearing sounds from my car that I never hear before. And also I'm getting blue smoke out of my exhaust. Seems dodgy.

  • I got to do my 150K major service for my Subaru, i think i might need to change the timing belt for 150K.

Does changing timing belt or a log book servicing entitled as major service? if so then with free servicing it should be only the parts right? like $250 for a timing belt kit.

so tempted, even though i have already brought $79 Sutton's one and already did a servicing there.

Cost me $515, to change the brake pads (rear) and grinding the disk (both), oil change was free though.

    • Pretty sure they'd find a way of weaseling out of doing a timing belt service. Probably by claiming that it doesn't fall under their regular major service packages or some such.

Reason being it's pretty damned labour intensive. And Japanese cars are built around the part you want to replace, making matters worse.

  • "2 x Puncture Repairs - RRP $35 each"
last time i had a tyre fixed, it only cost like $20, unless the price of repair kits has almost doubled since then??
so what's the difference between a major/minor service? spark plugs & fuel/oil/air filters changed?

    • Errrr I get my punctures repaired for $15 each…. a minor change is generally just oil + oil filter…. the major service is usually oil + oil filer + air filter + fuel filter + spark plugs. :)

    • +1

You'd be much better getting your tires done at a WideTread or Bridgestone place. It only takes them a few minutes, they actually know what they're doing and they don't charge much.

  • +1

So in a major service we would be paying for the oil + oil filter + air filter + fuel filter + spark plugs…. on top of that we've already paid $79. i think its just a marketing gimmick for those who dont read the fine print.
seriously! how can we save $928 worth when we're still paying for parts?

    • Try telling the 500 odd people who took it up. Not sure if they offer a 30 day money back guarantee like Jump-On-It do.

  • Have never heard of a service centre quoting a service based on labour only RRP excluding parts (oils and filter at least).
