  • if you can handle the bulk, dslr gets you out the “ but is the camera any good on that model phone” syndrome.

cheap way to get into dslr, it’s only 18 mpixel, not sure what entry nikon is now d3400?

a phone will never come close just due to the size of the optics and ability to catch light , but phone has convenience …..i use my phone for quick pics and emergencies but my dslr when i need better framing, low light, resolution.

Nikon will have higher megapixels, but this is really not the most important stat for most users.

I'm not that fussed with mexapixels and more about low light …. but for some it's a selling point.

If all someone has is a phone, and they think it takes great pictures, this is a cheap way to get to the next level… can't beat a large aperture and lens to capture light.

A lot of the phone upgrade comparisons seem to target "better camera" , I'm not sure they can ever catch to DSLR … sensor technology gets better in both phones and cameras , but phone always has the limit of size for lens, and size for sensor.

Entry level Nikon is 24MP. So is the Canon EOS 2000D/T7/4000D.

Mid level Nikon is now 20.9 MP having traded MP for frames per second (something that I hate actually, but not for reasons any amateur would care about).

It's not the megapixels at all. It's the noise performance and dynamic range of the older Canon sensors that's not quite as good as Nikon's.

There would be nothing wrong with this as a first DSLR. You can do better, but it would be fine for casual shooting. Don't expect the best autofocus for fast moving stuff. And it will get you locked into the Canon ecosystem though. And things are about to be shaken up big time by both Canon and Nikon so who knows what will happen. But it's less than $400. If you don't want to spend that DSLR might not be right for you. The whole point is to be able to change lenses and they aren't cheap.

Great advice… megapixels are so 2016

      • Im looking at getting a new DSLR but dont want to make a purchase with the new potential releases… you have any thoughts on the Nikon D750?

      • @syousef - How are things about to be shaken up?

  • Any kit lens is going to be rubbish, they're filled with plastic but for entry level and the price, you could always get a nice 50mm lens and take some portraits!

    • For people who are on the fence regarding kit lenses…neofelis is right…my kitlenses almost never get used and I am an amateur user…they are pretty hard to sell off also. Skip the kitlenses and buy one better lens for your primary purpose. Expand from there to other lenses

    • Shoot between f/8 and f/11.
STM kit lenses are better in the Canon lineup.
