Health Insurance - Junk Policies (Cheapest to Avoid Medicare Levy Surcharge)

I'm looking for the junkiest policy that basically covers nothing. Only opting it to avoid the medicare levy surcharge.

Which provider currently has the lowest rates? Used to be Frank. Is this still the case?

  • No there are cheaper policies.

Not by very much so it depends on how you much you value your time in finding one.

Frank's price is very good. You could save another $5 per year by shopping around. Is it worth it?

  • +1

HIF was pretty comparable and marginally cheaper when I last checked

  • GMHBA is another one to look at.

  • I got an ahm one for that reason.

  • I got one with myown - $16 a week and includes aiavitality so i get approx half priced gym, free gift cards and qantas discounts

    • Do you know how their Qantas flight cashback works?
      10% to 40% cashback seems a lot!

      • Yeh based of the different tiers you have in the system - bronze 10% silver is 30, gold 40 and platinum is 50%.

Discount applies for just those on the policy and just those with the silver etc level. But you can book multiple tickets per booking ie for spouse and yourself but you only get discount on your ticket. It’s economy and premium economy only, and can be either return or one way but flight must originate in Australia.

You get two discounts per year.

  • Cheapest for us (couple in NSW) was health.com.au

2nd or 3rd cheapest for us (WA family policy) was NIB. If you do actually use it the bonus is no gaps for children (for hospital admission) and it's one of the few hospital policies that includes ambulance cover.

Still fits the definition of junk because you will be up for huge out of pocket costs if you use it as an adult, and a long list of exclusions.

  • Single income in Tier 2 (yes, I know I am lucky) with a minimum of $1500 per year. Monthly budget as I save for first home just gets bigger.
