Oysters in Adelaide - What's Your Go to?

First time traveller to the City of Churches and the missus and I are looking to enjoy some of SA's finest oysters (Coffin Bay being the best AFAIK). Having done some preliminary reading into various outlets - bars, restaurants and whatnot, I'm finding the "subjective opinion of a TripAdvisor member" not quite convincing in deciding where to go.

So, my good Adelaidians, Crow Eaters if you will, where do you go to get the best oysters? For reference we're staying at The Playford M Gallery on North Terrace.

Bonus points question - recommendations are sought for a Barossa Valley tour, small-medium group size preferred. Any positive experiences you or those you know might have had with a specific provider would be greatly appreciated!

Thanking you very much in advance.

Udaberri shuck to order and have good quality for price. Oh and they used to do a doz for 25 on Sundays not sure if they still do. Good little gin bar with local brews and a nice tapas style menu on leigh st. I work nearby as a chef and frequent it quite often.

Avoid the oyster bar on East terrace at all costs.

    • Cheers horse, appreciate the heads up. Any recommendation from an industry professional is rolled gold as far as I’m concerned. That’s going to be our Friday night post wine tour feed, thinking Andre’s for dinner the night before and either Peel St or Red Flamingo (or whatever it’s called in North Adelaide on that strip) for the premiere meal of the trip on Saturday night.

      • Great choices for meals. Definitely go for the Andre's banquet, and book Peel Street asap if you haven't done so yet - well worth a visit!

I have done an oyster pilgrimage to coffin bay and adjacent areas.

To be honest, I found most of the oysters to be of indiscernible difference. The locals inform me that they're the same variety of oysters. The price difference between Coffin Bay oysters directly from the farm and a no name oyster from a servo 3 hours away was 3 fold. Bought both live, blind test, shucked at home.

This was about 10 years ago. Coffin Bay was $15 per dozen, servo was $5.

  • Just don't go to this oyster & salad bar
