Travelling to Hawaii Big Island - Should I Cancel?

Hi,

Have already booked flights to Hawaii for next weekend. Flying into Honolulu and then straight across to Kona (on the big island) for 3 days then back to Honolulu for about 6 days.

Getting quite concerned with the volcano activity on the other side of Big Island. Should I seriously consider cancelling going there and just stay in Honolulu? I assume some activities I have booked I can just cancel with some notice but flights and hotels may be tricky! Flying with Hawaiian for all 4 legs

I have travel insurance with unlimited cancellation cover. Not sure when that would help us in this case or if would at all.

Appreciate any advice

thanks

Recommend you check smart traveller and also call your hotel to get advice on what local conditions in the area are like.

That is the best advice; personally I would probably go as it is 3 days and it would be an experience, but the smart travel advice and the hotel should know best

    just go.

  • Pyroclastic happy snaps!
Anyway, Kona is on the 'safe' side of Kilauea.

    • Don’t say that around portugués people

I dunno I heard the lava flows are faster than a turtle.

I would just go. Witness some amazing nature.

Imagine the stories you can tell your grandkids/colleagues!

  • I went last year and loved it. Big island is always had active lava, its only when it comes out near houses that people take notice. Got to ride a lava wave, poked a stick in, pissed on it, roasted sausages, burn different stuff, endless fun.

Sounds like my dream lava experience.

    • Holy cow. Now I wanna go to Hawaii just to piss on lava.

  • Just go. In a worst case scenario tell your friends you got an 'authentic Hawaiian body modification' while over there.

    Call them and ask.

If they say bo, there is you answer. They are unlikely to want to risk payout if stranded which will be more than paying for cancellation of that part of the trip.

Also call the hotel where you are staying

    Overall…

Given they havent even considered evacuation of the whole island you should be ok

  • I'd be rethinking my plans at this stage.

  • Kona is safe its on the other side of the island from the erupting Volcano [look on a map ]
