New Google Duplex AI. Impressive, or Downright Scary?

So at the recent Google IO event they unveiled their newest addition to the Google Assistant AI.

Google Duplex

Essentially this is Google's best attempt at machine ability to exhibit human behaviour.

I am personally impressed but can understand some peoples reservations on this kind of thing such as originally thinking you are talking to a human and then you realise you are talking to an AI (if you even realise at all).

I suppose it really gets you thinking about the next level again. If AI can start conquering this sort of thing, whats next?

What are your thoughts on this OzBargainers?

AI is limitless , as feared by Elon

    • Elon is definitely an expert in this field and I feel companies like Google should take his advice onboard.

I've had professors in my computer science degree tell me that AI will never have the ability to 'think'.

      Time will tell.

We often overestimate how things can change in the short term, but underestimate how they can change in the long term.

I'm not easily impressed by Google product demonstrations since in reality a lot of them hardly work and are cancelled as no one uses them.

    • I agree with you however I'm happy to see them giving it a go and putting in the R&D.

Nice to see some newer features for a change at the IO event and not just ones we've already seen elsewhere (last few Apple events).

How is this impressive? The conversation is so constrained. Most restaurants don't even require booking. Also the person said between 10am and 12pm which shouldn't include 12pm or 10am, the assistant doesn't even know what between means.

And if I'm going to spend $20 or whatever at a hair salon my last concern is making a 30 second phone call.

I don't consider this as AI. It's a bit like how TV programs show AI as a human-like robot, when that's not what artificial intelligence means. Maybe there's a fraction of the Turing test here, but I'd really like to see it handle a curveball question. Robotic mimicry isn't intelligence, it's just Google trying to commercialise the term. This is closer to the 80s text adventures like Leisure Suit Larry, that wasn't AI, combined with some nifty text to speech. It's pretty easy to prank people with just an Arnie soundboard.

Agree. Definitely a fraction of the Turing test. Would love to see a beta release and be able to play around with it just to see how 'smart' it really is. I feel like until it is really spot on because until it is pretty much close to perfect it kind of defeats the purpose of using it.

  • I think its killing alot of jobs and people needs to find new ways to survive…
Once this is up and running it means there would be no need for phone customer service.

    • It could also lead to the end of radio announcers.

    • It is killing jobs that people don't like doing anyway - hence they're typically bad at it. Better to get people doing things they are interested in and thus more likely to be talented at.

    • This is true however the same applies to so many jobs that have already been replaced by IT and many more to come.

The new Amazon grocery stores for example do-away with cashiers completely.

No poll option for not impressed and not concerned.

Phone scam call centres can also be hopefully replaced with this.
I'd like to more clearly understand the tax office marshal or windows support instructions when they ring me.

Hopefully?! You're hoping for people to get scammed (and spammed) by calls from an AI bot?!?

  • Here is the demo and some analysis for those who haven't seen it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BffChqYEPo

  • It better be able to understand some real aussie slang.

    • Even if it can, I suspect they will have to do a lot more work to roll-out an Aussie Accent and phrases. The example in the video says "Oh I gotcha" which I think is quite an American phrase.

      • The next time you receive a call, you should first ask "What's my mother's maiden name"? If he can answer, he's a bot.

Or some questions like what's pi x pi to the power of pi equals to?
