Broadband is extortion - can 4g compete with ADSL?

Hey guys, we are in need of some internet at home, and I’m so discouraged by the ADSL options. Slow speed, annoying setup charges, contracts, and hassle when moving.
These concerns have gotten me looking into 4g broadband options. Specifically optus’s offer of 200gb per month for $70. Not much more than ADSL, and heaps more convenient - although speed is 12/1.
I’ve never had capped internet at home, and am concerned I’ll burn through that data cap - but can stop my heavy consumption tasks if need be.

Those who have done the same - how has it gone for you? Any better plans I’m not aware of? Anyone know if Optus’s data free Spotify and Netflix streaming applies to their mobile broadband as well as mobiles?

  • can you get optus cable?

    • Also check Whirlpool.net.au for every wireless provider.

    • What a cool concept - not available in my area, but I’ve done some networking with the hardware they use (1km wifi links) and what they are doing is really clever

  • If you mean the Optus Vividwireless 200gb offer; the $70 per month includes $199 setup fee unless you sign up for 24months. It is not available in all areas so if you move in the next 2 years you may be up for cancelation fees. It is not on the regular Optus mobile network and needs the expensive modem. No free TV/Music.
You can get regular 4g plus service with 149gb from Optus on a 12-month plan @ $70 p/m. At least this one can be used anywhere Optus has coverage, 3g included. It includes the data free TV and music streaming, although limited to 1.5Mbit/s and SD quality. If you can make do with some Netflix shows at SD you could save data and only watch your favorites at FHD or higher.

I was stuck with SkyMuster before the larger data allowance(It is still small data allowance) and low data caps are crap. I thought about the Optus 4g since I couldn't get ADSL either. I managed to get the property reclassified to NBN fixed wireless as my neighbors had it and SkyMuster is meant for when there is no other option.

If you are high consumption and have to sink a setup fee, it may be worth looking at the ADSL option over the VividWireless(Unless you won't move for 2 years, but 200gb isn't much), or go with the Optus 4g 149GB 12month plan for $70, or 100gb @ $70 month to month.

Spintel offers ADSL2+ for $54.95 with unlimited data and $0 setup fee on a month to month basis at the moment. I am not aware of any other isp's that will give you a free setup.

    Best of luck.

    • Thanks for the great info! That spintel deal sounds pretty good… if I do the Optus $70 100gb plan, and move our mobiles over to their $40 15gb plan, all the data is shared so will have 130gb between home and mobile… not huge, but may be enough. Especially if Netflix is free (happy wth sd most of the time)

  • I'm on the Optus 200 GB mth by mths sim based wireless dongle internet most times of day I get 14 mbps after midnight up to 27mbps so much faster than ADSL

  • +2

I'm on the 200GB for $70 month-to-month with a $50 wifi modem. Works well for my purposes. I was worried at first about the quota, but I never get anywhere near it. I think they dropped it back down to 100GB at the end of April though…

  • I am using Vividwireless 20GB for my whole family. It's good enough for most of the time unless you want to stream multiple devices at the same time. The router is quite limited options though. Eg, can't allocated internal IP. Let me know if you are interested, they have referral code to give Fred month to referee and referrer.
