Legit Vs Dodgy Windows - How Much Would You Pay for Legit?

Often i see a debate on the forums about buying Windows.

Some insist on $100+ oem copies of Windows.
On the other hand there are many windows 10 keys being
sold on ebay us and uk from 4-15 dollars.

Its hard to justifying spending 100+ on legit license
when you can buy a cheap chuwi or teclast with a legit key
for $100.

If microsoft lowered their price to $30, would that be cheap
enough to make you go legit?

(as an aside, a friend at A pc store said they sold grey copies of
windows for full license price)

So what should microsoft charge?

As long as it activates Windows and is the cheapest way possible, I'm happy

  • I don't see the difference between buying unauthorised keys and piracy other than the pirates may be more intelligent.

I don't see the difference between buying unauthorised keys and piracy…

Use of unauthorised keys happens on the computer and piracy happens at sea.

      • You wouldn't download a pirate ship……

    • Windows 10 is far more difficult to activate without paying compared to windows 7

I think the last OS I paid retail for was Windows 95. All editions since then have come with a PC or/and have been upgraded for free.
I would be happy to pay up to $50 for a significant version number release of home or entertainment editions, and $100 for Pro Edition, less for Server Edition. I have never used enterprise but would expect to pay for it.

I would not pay if it includes adverts and other PUP/Malware etc. The last few major updates to Windows 10 have included games and other PUP. Also some adverts etc.
The OS needs to be clear of that sort of garbage, so I think the only way to ensure this is to buy the OS outright or "free" with a new system. That way MS gets paid and doesn't have to find revenue for that product elsewhere, as long as MS does take our money and keep it clean! The amount of garbage already finding its way into a clean install of Windows 10 is concerning.

  • While I think the intention is good, responses to such questions are spurious because respondents are inclined to understate the price they would be prepared to pay. That said, I think a more pressing issue is, as is mentioned upthread, the amount of cruft and spam that appears to accompany otherwise legitimate Windows 10 installs.

I got some generic Velux imitations that claimed they are just as good. Supposedly premium hinges and sealing for the double pane construction.

It has only been 24 months and the hinges are showing rust signs, the opening mechanism isn't silky smooth anymore and the windows fog up in between the panes.

Only genuine windows for me from now on.

    • Fake windows can be a real pane

  • I went from not so activated windows 7 to activated windows 10 when the switch offer was around, upgraded my mobo and CPU and could not find a way to activate without buying a key and got a $5 OEM key off ebay and it worked perfectly.

  • From the Microsoft website, if they had sold digital downloads that are genuine, licensed copies for $25-$30, I'd buy
