Tourist Refund Scheme for Layby / Payment Plan

I've recently purchased an expensive item (jewellery) and am also moving out of the country. I should have planned this better from the start, but I now realise that I may be able to claim the GST portion back through the TRS.

My problem is that the original invoice was issued more than 60 days before my departure. The payment was made in 3 instalments: the first payment was more than 60 days before departure, and the following 2 payments were within the 60 day period. I received the item after the final payment.

The tax invoice that I currently have lists the issue date and all 3 payment dates. Will I be able to claim a full or partial GST refund via the TRS?
Is it valid for me to request a tax invoice from the seller with the printed date as the final payment date?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

  • Ask the retailer and see if they can issue you a tax invoice for that jewellery the day you got it

  • +1

Ask for an final invoice dated with the final and total payment and when you took possession of the jewelry. What you got was an interim invoice for purchase which listed each partial payment.

  • Thanks for the advice, I'll ask now. Hopefully he doesn't think I'm asking him to do something dodgy.
