(MEL) Uber Ride I Got Slugged So Much from The Airport to The CBD

From Melbourne Airport to the CBD at 1pm it cost me $47.45! That's the total including surcharge, toll. Yet it's ridiculous! Is there any way to get a lot lower?

Use public transport? get someone to pick you up? Find someone in the airport to share the ride? Not going through tolls might be cheaper, but not by much.

    Skybus

Ever heard of the Skybus? Public transport? Do you not know what Google is?

  • +5

Pretty cheap considering it’s barely possible to make that trip in under an hour regardless of the time of day.

    • In general, an express SkyBus trip takes 30 minutes from Southern Cross Station to Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. During peak times (approximately 6–10am and 3–7pm), please allow for an average trip time of 45 minutes.

Depends on your definition of the CBD. Different story trying to get to the Spring Street end of Collins.

As I have said countless times, Melb airport is rubbish. Accessibility problems, aging infrastructure.

      • +2

Yup. Dread travelling to MEL entirely due to the trip between the city and the airport. SYD inferior in many ways but much more convenient for business travel (train!), including not having to leave the city two hours before your flight just in case someone has done something dumb on the Tulla.

      • Yet another case of privatisation failing to deliver good service because they're a profit seeking entity.

The majority of Liberal and Labour politicians maintain that the complete opposite, that service levels should be high. They do this despite all the examples all over the country, and in every utility bill you open, of this being false.

They playin you for a fool if you vote for them.

Many fools here still waiting for your wisdom. When do they find out?

        • Diji1 please answer a simple question.

If we are fools for voting Liberal or Labor, who do you suggest we vote for?

Or are you really just as bad as the politicians you often criticize?

          @Baysew:

Diji1 seems invariably uninterested in answering this question.

I suggest questioning the idea of voting altogether, at least in a state-based framework, and at least having conversations about alternatives.

IMO a great short read (or audiobook / youtube video) to get started is "Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau.

      • Well at least you can say that it's a lot better than Sydney's.

That sounds about right for Uber. A taxi would have cost you about $65-70. So, Uber is cheaper than a taxi. What else did you expect?

    • +1

Possibly because last time I used Uber was at night and it was only around 25. So I was taken back with the sudden jump in price

  • Walk

Are you cooked? I paid $70 for a cab to North Melbourne once. I would highly suggest laying off the meth.

Think logically it is about 23-25km thats around 4-7 litres of petrol say $1.50 a litre plus wear tear on the vehicle and insurance just the overheads alone costs alone is around $10-$12 for the ride

It is about an hour drive and the driver needs to make at least $25-30 an hour

then uber takes a cut from the fare

    $47.45 ~ is blood cheap i wouldn't complain…Taxi would cost double that

    • 23-25km being 4-7 litres of petrol, are you assuming his Uber drove a tank? It's almost entirely freeway, I highly doubt he used more than 3L (12L/100km).

I'd have taken the Skybus unless you absolutely needed to get somewhere promptly.

  • If I'm alone I'll use the Skybus, with my partner then Uber or away a short time Ozbargain some airport parking and drive.

$47 seems pretty good to me, as noted above your driver is there to make money. If you want to be cheap then get the 501 bus from Craigieburn for about $6.

I got the Skybus yesterday. I think it is pretty much as efficient as it can be. I always allow an hour though it usually takes 30 mins.

Oh your other option is to wait 10 years for the train line to be built.

  • That's an ok price

  • As i usually take international night flights after work I'll take the cheapest ass train + bus combo to the airport, then on the trip back take an uber as I'm more tired on the way back.

  • The uber cost wasn't too bad IMO, and the alternate Skybus service is pretty good.

If/when a train line is built to Melbourne airport, don't expect it to be as quick as Sydney's. The physical distance to Melbourne airport is approximately double that of Sydney's for a start.
Cost-wise, it would need to be a 24hour rail service to align with Melbourne airport's 24hour operation (as opposed to Sydney airport's overnight curfew). Those costs associated with running a 24hour rail operation would need to be factored in as well.
