My experience with Austpost - Pleasantly surprised

Recently I ordered three items to be delivered - two through Myers and one through Catch of the Day. They were all to be delivered by Australia Post. I felt the dark cloud of doom following me when I heard this but the experience was actually quite good.

Both Catch of the Day and Myers gave me tracking numbers so I could watch what stage my deliveries were at. I knew the Myers items were coming from Sydney to Melbourne so I wasn't expecting them "next day" and the Catch of the Day was from Melbourne but I ordered this a couple of days later

In the end two of the items were delivered on one day, (one Myer one Catch of the Day) and the other item on the following day (other Myer).

The day prior to delivery I was sent emails and SMS messages telling me my stuff would be delivered the next day.
On the morning of delivery the sent me a message which gave me three options
1) Leave the item in a secure place,
2) Some one would be home to receive delivery,
3) If no one was home to take it to the nearest post office
I had to SMS which option I wanted.

The guy delivered them on the morning of the day they said and I had to sign for the goods.
I then got an SMS telling me the goods had been delivered.

I had the same experience with the last package but the delivery was a tad later in the day.

This was followed up with an email asking me what my experience was like.

Must say this was a far superior experience to most of the couriers I've had to deal with lately. I was very impressed. My only improvement would be if they could say if it was AM or PM for delivery so I don't, potentially, have to hang around all day.

Well done Australia Post.

Yeah I have a great time with Australia Post as well, they are fast for me as well, never really had a problem

AusPost has given me the best experience overall in my area. I'm currently waiting on a package from Toll and apparently there's already 2 attempted deliveries (no card left) even though the instructions were to leave it in a safe place.

  • I was just surprised how good the experience was - I've had a couple of shockers recently with other delivery companies including one where the guy didn't even attempt to deliver the package just left the card in the letter box and ran away; our door bell is right next to the letterbox. (I heard the letter box make the noise when he left the card but by the time I got to it he had disappeared).

    • I absolutely hate it when they do that. I'll be waiting all day at home, making sure I'm in the room right next to the front door, not going to the toilet (and if I have to, I run back to the door and open it to make sure I didn't miss anyone). What do I find that afternoon in the letterbox? "Sorry We Missed You". Effin' A.

Hope Amazon brings more improvements. Where my brother lives in the US, often a contractor for Amazon will deliver the package (and you can even pay extra for same-day delivery sometimes). They'll take a photo of the package by the front door and email that to you. If you buy the required hardware, Amazon can even let the delivery person into your house to make the delivery (opt-in only of course, they get a one-time authorization, there's a security camera that videos the entire thing, etc.). Sometimes you get an estimated delivery time, and often you'll get an update saying that they're X deliveries away from you (you can watch them drive to you in real-time, kinda like the Uber app).

My first Amazon.com.au order with free shipping was delivered by Fastway Couriers and we all know about their reputation.

Parcel left outside front door, no knock on the door or anything; well at least it was delivered.

    • That's the worst. Since the driver already took the effort to drive to the house, I don't get why they don't just knock or sound the car horn to save them having to re-deliver the package.

      • They didn't redeliver the package they dropped it at the local pick up point and I had to go get it.

Best thing AusPost ever done to me; Parcel Locker :)

    • Don't disagree - we subscribed to it too. The man is overseas at the moment, and I don't drive, so it was better to get the boxes delivered to home. Certainly a great option if people aren't home most days.

I thought so too until I moved areas.

        "Lockers are full"
        "Transferred"
        "Please collect"

** Head off to Post Office **

        "What parcel?"
        "Sorry, can't find it"
        "Wasn't scanned in"

** Lodge complaint with Customer Service **

"Sucks to be you, case closed"

        • May I ask where you live DC? I'd hate to be using your Parcel lockers. Currently use Coorparoo Qld lockers and about to switch to Mansfield so hope I don't get the messages you quoted.

        • @Neenie Beamer: I'm in NSW, so you're safe.

I was about the first person to sign up, using the lockers in the city (QVB & 310 George for a while) pretty much daily. Never had a problem aside from the occasional parcel that goes missing from China.

Switched to the Bankstown lockers and started losing 1-2 per month. And these are ones where tracking clearly shows where the package is. Not sure what the folk at Bankstown PO think my random $2 electronic components etc are, but they sure do like pinching losing them.

Back to QVB now (they wondered where I was).

AusPost don't give the slightest shit.

My AU Post courier usually turns up around the same time for every delivery.

  • Mainly had positive experiences with AusPost, by far the best out of any of the domestic postal services, except 1 mis-delivery to my neighbour. It often depends on the contractor you get, but AusPost usually cycles them across areas over time in order identify and avoid that issue. Fedex for international.

  • Its always here and there for me, about 75 percent of the time the person at Aus Post is always pissy for some reason, though I usually go when they're packed (around 5pm sort of thing or a Saturday).

Other then that I find delivery good, can be a bit hit and miss but good for me.

The biggest issue I ever have with Aus post is packages, the number of times I'll get a "non delivered" packaged even though I was either home, live with like 10 people where someones always home or just never ever get a card for the missed delivery and then have Aus post be pissy at me over "taking so long to pick up a package" I never knew arrived gets to me. End of the day though, the delivery drivers are contractors and not actually from Aus Post.

As someone said above, I recently got a parcel locker and literally 99 percent of my issues are now gone, pick up anytime is amazing and I get a text whenever a package arrived so I can pick it up easily.

  • Yeah that’s the thing. Auspost is just like any other company, there’s good and bad eggs. A lot of the time they’re not trying to jerk folks around and believe it or not in a lot of companies (not just AP) the employees often feel just as powerless as the customers, particularly when they’re on the receiving end of complaints and the higher ups don’t care or don’t know.

My expertience with AP has been largely good too, ocassionally the postie is a jerk but let’s face it, it’s prob a tough job that isn’t glamorous or necessarily that appreciated so I give him the benefit of the doubt. People are people.

all is good with Aus Post until you start living next to a depot…

7:30am delivery every single time, fml

  • AusPost is still quite reliable in terms of getting a parcel from one destination to another.

Just lower your expectation to 14 days for domestic city-to-city delivery and you will be fine! :)

It could be there tomorrow - or a fortnight. With AusPost anything is possible!

  • My last couple deliveries over the last two weeks have both been Aust Post.
I found that they gave me a one week delivery estimate - then exceeded that time by a couple days.
I wonder if they are adopting a 'under-promise and over-deliver' type approach'.
By setting expectations low they are now in a position to exceed expectations by just providing a decent service.

  • The Auspost guy in my area is giving me the shits. Every single time, he just pops a calling card and runs to the post office saying "Sorry we missed you". I was at home all of those deliveries for the past 5 years, yet not a single knock..

    • We used to get that at our old unit with the local Fastway. Card and run.

The AusPost guy somehow worked out which unit ours was though, so he would chuck our package onto the balcony! Luckily we never ordered anything fragile

This was followed up with an email asking me what my experience was like.

Australia Post isn't that bad, and as with everything, it's usually only the bad experiences that are posted online so that fact should always be considered when making decisions.

Having said that, if your experiences with this delivery guy isn't normally that good, there's a good chance he's gone out of his way this time after getting a heads up that there's a survey going around. If that's what's happened, there's a good and a bad to that. Good that you have a positive experience, but not good in that this particular experience might mean that the survey results don't reflect the actual experiences.
