Acer Aspire AOD255 (N451G16N Netbook) Processor N450 for $259 after $39 cashback.

70

I went to HN looking for a netbook and there was no pricing for this model shown so I asked the staff who checked and said it's on special for $298. I didn't buy one because I am still hunting the EM350 which was for $199 at OW. I believe this is eligible for $39 cash back as well, which will be $259.

  • That model number definitely shows on the Cashback page…

    http://www.shopacer.com.au/ecprod/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Load…

HOWEVER - the buyer must ALSO make sure that the PartNumber/SKU matches what is shown in that first column. If not, claim will not go through.

The P/N or SKU is shown on the sticker on the end of the box. I uploaded a photo of the one from the EM350… just to give you an idea of where to look (of course the Acer P/N will be different)

  • How many cells in the battery? Do they specify how long it lasts (under their predefined conditions)?

Why all these netbooks with 160 GB (rather than more generous 250 GB) hard drives?!?

Has anyone successfully self-upgraded hard drives?
If so, which model drives work in ASUS machines?

    TIA

    • Spec page:

      http://www.acer.com.au/acer/product.do;jsessionid=F131C9E091…

      24.4 W 4400 mAh 3-cell Li-ion battery pack Battery life: 4 hours
      48 W 4400 mAh 6-cell Li-ion battery pack Battery life: 8 hours

The linked Harvey Norman page states "Go all day on one charge! The Aspire One D255 lets you work, play, and stay in touch longer thanks to its 8-hour battery"

The cheaper models have 160GB drives since this allows another higher-specced unit to be sold at a higher price. It's the exact same reason as why the cheapest cars have plastic wheel covers rather than alloy rims.

Any 9.5mm thick 2.5" hard drive will fit in there. You'd need to get yourself a full restore disk first, so that all the BIOS, drivers etc were installed onto the new drive. The other option is to mirror the hidden partition, or create a boot drive with a backup.

For the eMachines EM350 that I bought, there is a inbuilt Windows application that allows you to create an ISO of the boot drive restore. I'd assume that the Acer would be similar since it's the same manufacturer.

      • My link above to the Acer spec page doesn't work any more, it was session-based. You have to go there using that link then click "Products" then "Netbooks" then "Apsire One D255" and then "Technical Specifications" tab

        • Isn't the BIOS stored on the motherboard?

I too have an Acer notebook and it has the option to burn a copy to DVD of the operating system with factory defaults. This allows you to use the DVD's to restore the notebook's operating system back to its original "out of the box" condition and contains all of the required drivers etc. You use these DVD's when your hard drive is replaced due to failure or upgrade. They effectively contain the software/files in the recovery partition of your hard drive (if you have a recovery partition - most notebooks seem to these days).

        • Yeah bean_counter, you are probably right about the BIOS… that would be silly to store on the Hard Drive. What you said about OS and Drivers is much more likely to be all that is on that restore partition.

    • I have an AOA150 and it might just be the worst computer ever put together. The battery life is < 1.5 hours (3 cell, non LED backlight), the touchpad response is terrible, the wireless antenna may as well be nonexistant and the screws are made of the softest metal known to man, making disassembling it without drilling out the screws nigh on impossible.

Would definitely have rather got an Asus netbook or similar.

  • +3

DDR3 Ram? I thought the N450 only supported DDR2? The N455 supports DDR3 iirc. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

    • You're right… and the Hardly Normal page is wrong.

The Acer spec page list DDR3 for the N550 (dual core) version and DDR2 for the N450.
