US West Coast - on a Budget

Hi all,

My wife and I are thinking of flying to San Francisco or San Diego from the end of June to mid July 2018. Once we get there we’re thinking of hiring a campervan and travelling along the West Coast.

We would like to fly out from Canberra. The best return return airfares that I’ve been able to find has been around $1400 (AUS) per person.
Does anyone know of any better deals?
We’re quite flexible with dates.

Also, does anyone know of any good/cheap campervan agencies along the West coast to book from?

Any help at all is greatly appreciated :)

Can be cheaper to fly out of Syd. Get the bus from cbr.

    • Thanks so much for the suggestion.
But, I haven't been able to find a better deal from Sydney either.

      • Probably also cheaper to fly to LA rather than SF. It's a short flight from LA to SF (I wouldn't recommend staying in LA more than a day).

  • June / July is summer for them. $1400 from CBR is good.

Rentals won’t be cheap just keep looking for discount codes etc. Again peek season, it’s summer for them so everyone is on holidays

  • Have a look at Lost Campers a US camper rental site , also I Moova which is similar to the Australian sites where for low cost you take relocation Vans / RV back to site.

  • Southern Cal and Nevada are sweltering at that time, just a heads up. Get an airconned camper. Even northern Cal is pretty sweaty.

  • Can you move your dates? You are looking at high summer, with equivalent costs. If you can move to September/October it is cheaper and the weather is still good.

The drive down the coast is good and it is worth heading over to Yosemite; the view from Glacier Point at sunset is very good.

We normally use motels so I can't comment on the camping grounds, but Americans usually do that sort of thing well. At that time of year you will need to book camp sites well in advance for places like Yosemite.

  • As long as your not in LA, New York or Honolulu you can do US on the cheap easy - even with the exchange and tipping it is cheaper then traveling Australia

A bit debatable on that, our dollar isn't parity and it isnt as cheap as it used to be.

I dunno - I seem to recall San Fran being pretty freaking expensive.

San Francisco is definitely expensive when you add the mandatory tax and tipping. It can add nearly 30% on top and then you do the currency conversion.

        • Yes, prices in the US only slightly correlate to the amount that you have to pay for something.

        • @macrocephalic: We lived in the US for a little while. By the time you looked at the price tag, took off the percentage discounted, took off the coupon discount then added on the tax I had no idea what something cost before I got to the till.
