Acer Swift 3 14" Laptop 8th Gen i5-8250U 8GB/128GB $759.05, i7-8550U 8GB/256GB $843.60 C&C @ Bing Lee eBay

PULL5

First time poster here. I use Ozb regularly and this deal is too good for me to not post it.

I have been looking at a 13-14" lightweight laptop with 8th gen Intel and SSD under $1,000AUD. I want to use it for my own business and will be travelling overseas soon (TRS refund) so didn't go with the previous Amazon deals.

The reviews for Swift 3 are all quite positive. Only issue could be the screen which is ~50% NTSC, but I use the laptop for translation / statistical analysis work only and don't play games on it. If you want something for photo processing then beware.

If you don't need a dedicated graphic card these are excellent value for money.

Today I was searching on ebay using Acer Swift 3 keyword and this popped. The prices smash all previous and existing deals and you will also get local warranty & TRS.

i7: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Acer-Swift-3-Notebook-I7-1-8GHZ-8GB-256GB-SSD-14-FHD-/153005038272 SOLD OUT
i5: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Acer-Swift-3-Notebook-I5-1-6…

Note: I went to a Bing Lee store directly and checked the model first before placing an order. When I asked the staff politely they happily agreed to give me a discount which brought the price of the i7 down to $855 (which is the same with Ebay if you add $12 shipping). This is a mother's day deal and expires on 13 May, so you can go to the local stores and try your luck if you don't want to wait.

Also bear in mind that the i5 model only has 128G SSD. I recommend the i7 model anyway.

  • great price!

  • ebay 20% off deal for Binglee if would have been available make it irresistible.

    • +2

I know right? But these are already heavily discounted and I doubt the prices will last till another 20% Bing Lee deal so I pulled the trigger.

IIRC the original price tags in store were like $900+ for i5 and $1100+ for i7, so chances are they jack the prices back and put a 20% deal… Your call.

      • It's already pretty cheap, don't think they will let it drop under $700…

        • The spin 5 dropped to like $675 (from $899) and originally from $1300. It's not impossible.

  • Does this one have the MX150? Bing Lee listing seems to only say Intel Graphics but looking at models with the same specs else where it includes the MX150?

    • +5

Both models have HD620 (integrated) only. MX150 is an option which unfortunately is not included in any of these.

Swift 3 has many configurations (ryzen/intel, HD620/MX150, touch/non-touch, 14"/15.6", etc.) and every seller seems to offer a few of them…

      • Thank you!

    • I would also like to know this. OP are you able to confirm what sort of graphic card this laptop has?

EDIT: Beat me too it, thanks :)

  • +1

Superb deal OP, these are great specs for the price. I know these have some issues with heating, and no Thunderbolt, but you can't beat an 8th gen i7 ultrabook for less than $850

  • +1

This is better spec'd than the latest $2500 macbook pro >.<

    • +7

You don't purchase a Macbook for specs..

      And it isn't better spec'd either…

  • Anyone have any experience with Bing Lee ebay returns? If you get and don't like the display, can you return it within 7 days at the ebay page indicates?

    • Fine print on returns is usually in resellabe condition ….you if youve peeled off screen protective plastic they can only resell as ex demo …also windows 10 would have been activated to your account if you booted and followed bouncing ball.

  • Thanks for the post OP.

I was also looking for a 14" but probably at a lower budget. Found the Swift 1 at Bing Lee also impressive at $522 (with the 5% off) https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Acer-Swift-1-Notebook-CELERO…

    • It's got a significantly worse processor, but enough for my needs
    • It's got full HD 1920x1080, rare at this price point
    • It's got a SSD (fast startup, though very poor storage)

So this is another option for those who are even more budget conscious.
I am certain the Swift 1 wasn't advertised on their website on 30/4, and I presume the Swift 3 wasn't there either, so this must be new

My bet is this is going to be their standard RRP rather than being a Mothers Day del - their website actually don't say anything about it being on sale/special etc. I'm hoping my bet will be correct and that 20% ebay deal may one day pop up, or maybe Bing Lee will do more % off deals before I buy…

    • +3

o_O that's an "Atom"-class processor in that form factor…rare indeed

But yes good price and sufficiently good for very light load usage

      • What do you define as heavy work ….many office desktops are now just using mobile processors i5, i7 in tiny cases to save power and space.

Next step are full blown desktops which can power other processors due to bigger power supplies and fans but not eveybody has the space this swift 3 would be nice upgrade from my gen 5 i5 with its hd screen

        • Hello! =)

Oh I was more commenting on the Swift 1 which Deridas mentioned (which has a Celeron with "Goldmont Plus" cores i.e. in the category previously known as Atom).

The Swift 3 posted by the OP is a pretty good deal, I agree with you about the i5 and think it is generally sufficient already. I haven't seen a Swift 3 in person and don't know its heat dissipating capabilities. If it can't dissipate the heat too well, the i7 will get throttled to similar level performance of the i5 anyway.

        • @zrmx:

Would this be a good buy for my mum who i want to get a laptop for basic Internet brownsing? With 10% ebay tomorrow off and i can get trs refund too. Or is there still a much cheaper but good laptop i should look at?

        • @CheapskateQueen:
Mmm, it really depends on the price ranges you want to spend and what you see as the potential future use for the computer.

If only light browsing: no more than 6-10 tabs at any one time (depend on what's running in the browser tabs), minimal multi-tasking, and don't expect much change in usage pattern in the future (to consider for softwares becoming more demanding, and let say passing the computer to a different user), and want to keep cost as low as possible, then Yes, I'd say the Swift 1 Deridas posted above is a fairly reasonable choice.

However, if you want to future proof the device a bit, then the Swift 3 14" i5 is actually quite a good price for what it offers, the value even beats some Refurbished Dells.

Now, I find it difficult to recommend anything 15" or above with <Full HD resolution (FHD is desirable even for 14") in the current times, due to how spoiled we are from the pixel density of current era phones. But if that's something not of importance for you, then lower price points may be achieved for sufficiently good spec, and if portability is not of high importance.

          E.g. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/332563788903, Dell Inspiron 15 3000series, $495.20 (after "PRAISE" eBay code)
          i3-7130U, 8GB DDR4, 1366x768, 1TB HDD
(Can add an extra $97.60 for a SSD to swap out the HDD to make the system more responsive, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331173259608)

    • I just looked up and realised the Storage of Swift 1 is actually eMMC, rather than general SATA SSD.

Performance wise it'll perform similar to HDD (or maybe slightly better, depending on the actual chips used).

      • Wow, I just bought my celeron earlier today with the sales/cashback, you had me scared at one stage there.

The Bing Lee website clearly says 128gb SSD, so I better open it up at click and collect and see the specs on the manual on the spot. I think there is a model with 64Mb Flash memory, but that's a different model number. In fact, Googling "NX.GXUSA.003" gives me no other matches apart from Bing Lee…

        • There could be a possibility that the manual will be a generic one similar to one that's found on https://www.acer.com/ac/en/AU/content/support-product/7211?b…

And yea if you can, best to check and verify the spec of the item to be as advertised at pick up. Hopefully they won't argue eMMC (while is Flash storage) is same as SSD, if it is turns out to be eMMC.

          Good luck!

        • @zrmx:

I bought the Celeron yesterday, the HDD model name is "hfs128g39tnd-n210a", which is definitely a SSD (https://www.ebay.com/p/SK-Hynix-Sc308-128gb-SATA-M-2-SSD-Dri…).

So bloody sad, it was $549 yesterday when I bought it (during the 10% ebay off + 5.4% cashback), and the price on ebay/website dropped to $499 today. Bloody hell, it just wipes off the 10% saving from yesterday, and the 5.4% cashback can be replaced by the PULL5 code.

        • @Deridas:
          =S about the price drop.

But at least good to know that it was a SSD.

  • How does trs work? You take the product overseas with you and bring it back when you return?

    • +1

Make the purchase within 60 days of your departure.
Make sure the invoice is in your name (same as passport).
Go to the airport (and go early), queue up, bring it for inspection

You can always bring it back without declaring as it's under $900 AUD. Or if you travel with an adult partner you can split $1800 between you two.

If it's over $900 you need to declare it and pay back the balance, or don't declare it and cop the fines when you are unlucky.

      • Thank you.

      • And get back 10 percent?

        • +3

Divide the full amount (with gst) by 11.

  • +2

Combine with shop back 5% cashback?

  • Hmm, still >1.5kg. So not too lightweight.

    • +2

Thanks for the heads up… Seems to weight 3.64 lbs or 1.65 kg. Good price for the specs though.

  • +3

This or the ASUS Vivobook F510UA(https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/373379) + SSD?

    • price would work out about the same anyway.

    • Some people like australian warranty unless big cost saving.

      • Also 15" v 14" screen. Notable difference there if used to that bigger screen. Still the Asus has small bezels and case size similar to 14" laptops and light too.

  • Out of stock for i7

    • i5 with 128gb ssd is a bit unexciting at that price, the i7 was the draw card for the extra $100.

  • Is i5 worth going for now or i7 is must?

    • +4

Chances are if you're asking the question an i5 will do fine.

    • +2

The 8th Gen i5 isn't far behind i7 for performance. The main benefit of the i7 model in this deal is the larger SSD.

  • +1

I am showing my age but I HATE the death of removable batteries and optical drives. HATE HATE HATE IT.

At least you can still buy external optical drives.

    • +2

It's not hard to open up a laptop and change the one that's fixed in there.

      • +2

Sure, but some users like myself often carry a spare laptop battery to use in emergencies just like swapping a battery in some older mobile phones like a LG V20 or Galaxy S5.

        • Power points are just about everywhere you will go, besides outside though.

Work, cafe, airport, most chain takeaway shops, other's homes, etc; all have juice points.

If you're so inclined; you can even get a power inverter for your car to charge your laptop (or anything else AC) whilst you drive.

Easier to carry your charger than spare batteries (unless you're a photographer/videographer, then you'll get a pass).

Just my opinion, of course. I prefer the aesthetic of tech more than features I'll never/extremely rarely use.

Also, syousef; why do you need an optical drive at all in 2018? Not picking; just generally curious. I haven't touched a disc on my home PC or my laptop since at least 2014.

        • @BradH13:

Not on suburban trains and buses. Not at the park or the beach. Noylt in a hospital or doctors surgery (not for patients and family in most waiting rooms).

And you can get into huge trouble "stealing" electricity if you use one without permission.

Plus many people are too scared to open up their laptop even if it is just a few screws and many laptops require much more to be removed to get to the battery.

Any yes I still regularly use DVDs. Why throw them away?

I don't understand how you cam talk about clean asthetics then suggest a power inverter.

  • Bought one today morning from Bing Lee store. Could not get the 5% discount. But sold it to me for $879.
ACT Fyshwick dont have any stock. (Display model available though)
ACT Belconnen still have 2 in stock.

  • -1

I got i7 lenovo E410 business notebook with NVIDIA 940MX for ~$600 when it was 20% off deal. Much better value imo than this.

    • +1

Thats refurb from Graysonline right with no warranty directly from Lenovo !

  • I have this laptop and IMO the build quality is pretty poor:
    - keyboard backlighting didn't work for me, probably just a one time thing
    - the screen is not as good as other laptops i've used
    - there is immense backlight bleed
    - metal construction is actually pretty poor and there are some gaps in the base

Overall considering the price and the specs, it depends on what you're after. This machine has the raw power but on the outside it's not the best. Ended up getting a surface book and couldn't be much happier about the build quality.

  • Lenovo have better deals on their E480 series

  • Considering i7 is out of stock, would you guys suggest paying $888 on Bing Lee website or pay $750 for the i5?

    • The i5 is very capable already, especially with this gen of CPU, the i5 is also a quad core with hyper-threading, just like the i7.

Depending on how well the chassis design can dissipate the heat inside it, at more strenuous load, the i7 likely will be throttled to similar performance level as the i5. The main deciding factor I'd say is more if you want a 128GB SSD or a 256GB SSD.

  • +2

I wanted the i7 for the 256gb ssd. Hope they get more stock

  • HOw would this laptop go for League of legends?

    • I wouldn't use any of it for LoL, I'd use a laptop with a dedicated GPU.

  • +2

Even better with the 10% off and 5.4% cashback deals. Fantastic first deal BlueNoir, thanks very much
