Can I Fix My Own Telstra HFC Cable?

So i recently ordered Telstra Broadband (not NBN). My house has an old grey telstra box outside, but no port inside. I have followed the lead in HFC cable from the box and discovered it has been cut, the port I presume it plugged into has been replaced with a new phone line (that I don’t use).

Question:

  1. Can I cleanly cut this HFC cable and plug it into a new plate and install it on my wall?
  2. Can I buy a new cable and run it from the telstra box into my house and install that?
  3. Do I need to give $240 to Telstra to fix what is clearly a 10minute job?
  4. Is there someone else that could fix this cheaper than Telstra?

I haven’t called Telstra yet because I’m pretty sure they’ll push me to Option 3.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

In theory you can. It's just RG6 cable with plugs either end.

If it's a new order though won't they fix it for free? I know Optus did when I ordered cable back in the day.

    • No. Telstra don’t see it as their fault that someone damaged their ports. They are quoting me $240 to fix it - the same cost of running a new line from the pit, installing the cable box, running wires under my house and cutting a new faceplate.

I don’t need all of that - just a new cable and faceplate.

Tell them that they did not complete the installation as there's no port inside your house.

        • Would be nice to try but they’ll find a cable leading from that box, through the property, and then been cut off and hidden behind a newer port.

    • Neither - we dont have nbn yet. Its the original square box that was installed in the 90s when foxtel was first rolled out. When I open it I see there are two cables - i think one is for power and one leads into the house. Its the cable leading into the house which has been cut that I need to fix or replace cheaply somehow.

      • Yup - that’s it.

  • Yes you can
as long as you don't disturb the 'telstra box' it is ok.
all connections after Telstra cable box (NTD - Network Termination Device) is customer's responsiblity. I
If there is a fault on the telstra box then it is telstra responsibility to fix and cannot charge you for it.
Personally i have done and few of my friends have done it.

  • Yes its just a RG6 plug. You can buy a crimper etc from many places, put a new end on it etc and away you go. If you're handy at these things that is.

Or you can buy some pre ended cables, and run a new cable all the way back to the box outside. Inside the box you'll find a joiner, unscrew your side and plug in the new cable.

You'll find something like this in there

Thanks. Went outside this morning and unscrewed the cable into the house without issue. Gonna try to use the cable supplied with the modem and run that straight through the wall into the modem. Should be okay I hope!

      • FYI. DIY cabling may render the unauthorised installer liable for damages to the carriers network equipment and potential prosecution.

        • Thanks, I saw that. I have no desire to damage telstra’s network.

      • yep that'll work!

        • Sadly, it didn't work. Ran the new telstra cable into the router and it didn't pick up a signal. I guess there is a problem between the pit and the house - Telstra have to send out a technician and its going to cost me the $240. They'll install a new wallpoint though - at this point I just want the internet up and running properly.

          At least I tried!

  • Proper cable work should be labelled. A technician should pick up that the lead in hasn’t and cut it next time they service the network.

    • Thanks.

    • lucky the OP is using the telstra supplied cable then, just removed the crap bit.
