Protein Shops - Are They a Viable Business?

Hey Everyone,

Long time stalker of OzBargain and discounts but only signed up because I Never had the need to post until now

I am no gym junkie or fitness freak wbut I am the occasional jogger and maybe 3 gym sessions a week here and there. But I have noticed that the number of supplement stores are growing with almost a few popping up in each suburb.

Are they feasible or viable to stay in business?
What are their return rates as an investments?
And do people actually buy from them or are more people favoured to shop online?
Has anyone have worked or have past experience owning one and what is it like?

It will be interesting hearing people's responses.

Can't beat prices offered by online stores such as Bulk Nutrients
I've also seen a lot of supplement stores open up, but they never stick around for too long.

    • Yup is sometimes see on auction houses certain stuff being auctioned off mostly ex businesses gone into liquidation

I am convinced they're money laundering fronts.

  • I am surprised stores like these still exist tbh. Prices are always cheaper online. In fact, there was a protein and sports supplements store that closed next to Chatswood Train Station after being open for only a couple months. It was always empty and the sole guy working there always looked depressingly lonely.

I think it’s just supply running ahead of demand. In the same way we’re oversupplied by personal trainers, gyms and novelty fitness programs like F45 or CrossFit.

Many of those businesses will have a short shelf life.

    • Yep. I agree.

    • Your comment regarding PT's and 'speciality' gyms is already happening. You're seeing this crazy growth of new F45 / Cfit gym's opening up. The growth of these gym's I think is a little scary. They don't open with the numbers they need and rely heavily on membership to promote new members. Given that they are substantially more expensive than traditional gyms with group fitness I think its only going to crash hard.

Ever since I watched Ozark on netflix any time I see a business that looks good but has no customers I think they must be involved money laundering.
