How does a Kiwi get Medicare, TFN, Etc?

Hi All,
My sister in law who is a New Zealander will be moving to Australia permanently.
What does she need to do ?
As far as I am aware kiwis get automatic SCV visa on arrival and are able to work.
But what about Medicare, Centerlink, first home buyers grant ?
Does she need to apply for Permanent Residency ?

Thanks

    Google?

    • I don't think OP knows how to google and find the contact details of Medicare or Centerlink and ask them :)

    • I agree, didn’t take much to Google these answers.

I just tried to google "does it take much to Google these answers"

        0 results!

  • Why not get your sister in law to ask Australian Consulate in NZ all these questions they are the ones who deal with this all day

I always thought anyone on a visa and not a permanent resident needed to wait 2 years before getting any form of Centrelink or Medicare.

This was to ensure that Australia doesn't get bled by casual stayers?
If the Visa allows work I'd expect there would need to be a TFN issued before employer can add you to the payroll and tax you

  • Needs to become a citizen.

PR gets all the same perks as citizen except for voting rights & deportation

      • Even medicare and centrelink? Geez, NZ has it good. If its reciprocal, they're expense on dole bludgers from AUS over there would be so tiny compared to the amount here. Aus, helping NZ budgets.

        • Its hardly a get rich quick scheme to be on newstart. The days of kiwis coming over and sitting around Bondi while on the dole are long gone.

As far as I know, your SIL will be eligible for Medicare when she lands, not sure if there is a waiting period before she can claim, but she will need to visit the relevant government department to apply for a Medicare card.

First home buyers grant, yes when she buys a house that fits the criteria.

Centrelink, no because that was the whole point of the SCV, so that Kiwis dole bludgers(I am allowed to use this term because I am Kiwi:) ) don't come across the ditch. Although, if she is a tax payer and has a family, she will have access to Family Tax Benefits.

Permanent residency is optional, although if she stays on a Kiwi passport, she will not be required to vote! However, if she has older kids, her kids will not have access to government student loans.

  • You may also need to get private insurance

  • No need for PR immediately.

You can apply for a TFN with the ATO. Go to medicare to apply for your card. Open a bank account and start paying those taxes once you get a job. I've been here 13 years and have only had PR for 18 months.

  • Just arrive before 2001 and she will be fine to get centrelink support straight away.
