Melbourne CBD / Southbank Restaurants and Coffee Shops

Hi,

The missus and I are going to Melbourne for the weekend. Never been and not sure of 'good' restaurants and coffee shops in the CBD and Southbank. Obviously what people consider good is subjective, but just looking for suggestions for dinner locations that have modern aus food (~$50-$60 pp) and popular places for coffee.

Cheers.

  • Searching Best X in Melbourne Tripadvisor will bring you some good lists and posts.

    For example:

I can never go past Roule Galette for some awesome crepes while in Melb. Also recommend trying Koko Black. They can be a little pricey but their chocolate and drinks are to die for. I normally choose them over Lindt.

    • Thanks @Clear. Yes I’ve had a look at TripAdvisor which have many reviews. I also appreciate the opinion of my fellow OzBargainers.

  • +1

When I have friends or family visiting from overseas or out of state, for restaurants I take them to places like Lucy Liu, Longrain, Sezar, Hakata Gensuke.

As for coffee, I'd probably take them to one of the places on Degraves St, or Higher Ground.

    • Thanks @OneJay. I’ll check out these restaurants and the coffee in Degraves St looks like a goa.

  • Sake on Southbank is great. Probably the only restaurant I'd eat at along there.

    • Thanks for the suggestion.

  • I follow thepenguineats for suggestions. Have been pretty spot on so far!

  • Thanks for that site. Haven’t come across that one.

  • So hard to recommend places without knowing your likes / dislikes, or if the price range you mention includes drinks?
I recommend taking a walk along the riverfront on Southbank and checking out all the menus on display, what the places look like, etc. Don't stop at Crown either, keep going along to South Wharf.
One of my favourites is Pure South; excellent Tasmanian produce but check the online menu to see if the prices are ok for you.
Another option we like is Bang Pop; authentic Thai (if you like that) but when they say a dish is hot (i.e. Jungle Curry), it will be!

    • Thanks. Bang Pop looks great. Will definitely stay away from Jungle Curry - menu icon has steam coming out of the ears

  • Gradi at Crown - Gradi tends to get great reviews for their pizzas.

    • Thanks. If we go to the Crown I'll have a look at the pizzas.
