Debit Card Recommendations

I have an elderly grandfather who has dementia and has had endless difficulties with a credit card in the past. He has signed up for things he shouldn’t and gotten fed up with a certain organisation that had direct debits, resulting in him cancelling the card and screwing up all bills and whatnot that were directed to the card.

Of course he wants to be able to spend his money which we completely understand. We are loooking into getting a debit card that we could load cash onto that he could use.

Loooking forward to your recommendations.

    (It's a Debit Mastercard)

    • Would not recommend for their grandfather. They charge a large fee to do a charge back, which could be important to this person, considering they may not have the required capacity to enter into contracts / make payments for things they shouldn't do.

  • I am on a Westpac Concession Choice account.

    It has a debit MasterCard.

You cannot buy stuff with the card if there is no balance I believe but you can overdraw if you go into the actual bank account or use the bank account instead of MasterCard when for example using PayPal.

Would actually also like to know this.

The only ones I know are some prepaid load n go cards from Australia Post stores.

    • Initial purchase $6.95
    • Minimum load amount $20
    • Maximum load amount $999
    • $0.09 per purchase transaction (9 cents), capped at $0.99 per month (30 days starting from the date of the first transaction)
    • cards expire three years from the date produced not sold (expiry date printed on front of card)
