GANZO Firebird F7551 Folding Knife - Carbon Fiber Handle, Portable, Axis Lock, AU $34.24 Delivered @ GearBest

90

Taking into account that these are possibly illegal to carry in public where you live. I really like this style of blade, and they get great reviews. Cheapest on ebay looks like $35 and that is not the carbon fibre model. Lots of reviews for them on youtube, however this one is the only one that pointed out the only reasonable negative @ around 11:15 if you don't want to go through the whole review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqNhYz81xrw
There is a cheaper model that uses g10 on the handle instead of carbon fibre Au$26.44 delivered https://www.gearbest.com/pocket-knives-and-folding-knives/pp…

    Will it through customs

    • +5

For sure but will it come out the other side?

      • +2

        As he said, will it.

        • +5

I think he said to use your will to make it go through customs.

        • +2

@cnut: I think it can, I think it can.

        • +1

          Coffee on keyboard, thanks!

  • Well, I've bought a few, one from the states. I think it's only illegal to carry them in public. It is here now (Tassie), can't even carry a leatherman.

    • Yeah illegal to carry without a legit reason. It's all good if it's part of your toolkit for work(and you are at work or travelling to or from) or you are about to carry out a legal recreational activity that you need a knife for, for instance if you can prove you are on your way camping or fishing you are generally OK.

      • +1

Define legit reason though. I ride a motorcycle and my leatherman is basically the toolkit for my bike. I work in IT and often need a knife for opening boxes, and pliers, screwedrivers, etc. It would be pretty hard to argue that you didn't have a legit use for most (sensible) knives.

        • Your mileage may vary but my understanding it's up to the officers interpretation. But I also work in IT and had my manager write me an email mentioning that I would be using a pocket knife as part of my work kit as I breakdown lots of boxes and have to cut cable ties etc. frequently.

To quote Tas Police website http://www.police.tas.gov.au/services-online/knife-laws-educ…

"People undertaking lawful activities that require use of a knife won’t be affected. For example, a tradesman who uses a knife in their work will be able to carry it on their way to and from work, and while they are working. Similarly, recreational activities will also be exempt. Eg people going fishing, camping or hunting can possess a knife for those purposes

However people who regularly carry a knife, including a pocket knife or multi-tool, can no longer do so in a public place, unless pursuing a specific lawful activity for which the knife is required."

    • In N.S.W. the law states "A person must not, without reasonable excuse (proof of which lies on the person), have in his or her custody a knife in a public place or a school."

      • +3

Carry a chopping board and some cheese with you. "Oh, please. Kraft Singles? I like my cheese fresh, constable. Want some?"

Won't get through customs. Single handed opening knives won't get get through. However, you can still buy them in physical stores, but even the retailers can't get them in anymore

    • +15

This used to be the case, however customs has started letting thumb assisted knives back into Australia. Of course it's up to state regulations if you can carry them. I believe in VIC you can carry a small folding knife if it is necessary for work or hobby. And no, stabbing people isn't an acceptable hobby :p

Awesome! I can start shopping again. It annoys me that people think criminals are going to fork out big dollars on a quality knife and use it to commit crime. They'd just use a kitchen knife

        • It is frustrating. Most of the time law abiding citizens get punished with laws implemented because known criminals use an already illegal weapon to cause harm. They'd do much better with one of those plastic spoons or some zooper Doopers, much sharper then a knife.

        • These firebirds are considered cheap but good. It's kind of a thing with some people, like watches here (thanks watchnerd and pjc). https://anso-of-denmark.com/collections/knives prices are in US. I have an anso designed blade made by spyderco fairly cheap, a pingo. I love it. It has a similar style of blade to the firebird. I tried to post a link to it but ozbargain overlords dissapproved. This style of blade is definitely not "tactical" :)

        • +1

Surely criminals can afford $34.24 what, with all their gains from criminal activity and all.

        • +2

@poohduck: spydero make every nice knives … i have a few of their policeman knives with the stainless handle …. got off ebay usa and sent to australia.

        • @cnut: or they just buy it on stolen CC details.

        • @poohduck: What I was thinking. It looks just the thing for chipping off a couple of branches for a lean-to if the weather turns when hunting/hiking or whittling off some tinder, jointing small game et cet. If some bogan were to pull something like this wanting cash I'd probably give them what I had spare out of pity…

        • @garage sale: yes, they are a standard and seem to evolve. The few I own are very light. I also like swiss army for quality and functionality. It's amazing that you can get a spyderco or swiss army, and they are all consistent quality

      • Do you import Ontario Old Hickory knives?

        http://ontarioknife.com/cutlery/old-hickoryr/705-5-pc-cutler…

        • G'day, no I don't bring in that brand. I've got Dexter Russell Green River knives that would be the closest comparison style wise, however they are more expensive. I'm also unable to supply direct to the public as it would upset my clients. Green River is a very nice knife though, I'd highly recommend looking into them.

        • @Elderlymango: "Green River "

This, or Puma :-) It was the go-too brand for most of the Manawatu abattior workers after Koh-in-or [hand made in Hamilton].

        • @terrys: Puma is another great brand. There's two types of Puma knives. There's Puma itself which is still manufactured in Germany, then there's Puma SGB which is pretty much all the parts of a German made Puma but assembled in China to keep the cost down. I've handled both and unless you've got extra money burning a hole in your pocket, I'd go for Puma SGB.

    • Won't get through customs.

Why? Stuff gets through all the time.

    • Except that pretty much all leatherman multitools are single hand opening.

  • +1

I haven't bought any "spydie-hole" style knives, but flipper tab and thumb studs I have had no trouble with including Border Force bore-scoping and opening some. YMMV.

        • +3

No, I'm the sort of loser whose already bought them, as I have this time too :)

  • I bought a couple of spyderco knives with hole in blade and lock. One from the states and one from knivesonline (aussie ebay store). I thought it was just illegal to carry them in public.

This one is a good usefull knife "Authentic Sanrenmu 7063AUC-LK Stainless Steel Folding Knife" US $12.17/Au $16.05 from FASTTECH https://www.fasttech.com/products/1901/10001877/1822204
I have had one of these for the last 2 years, keep it edge, also has a built in bottle opener.

    • +1

Second this - fantastic knife for the money. Well made and super sharp. Locking mechanism is extremely solid.

  • +2

This will pass customs. It is not considered an assisted opening knife (ie. Spring action or gravity assisted).

It isn't a double edge bevel either.

The steel on this is not disclosed (and probably rubbish steel with poor heat treat). I wouldn't bother considering a 154CM skeletool can he had for ~$100 and has way more utility and a knife that would stay sharp for multiple more uses before requiring attention.

    • +1

      440c

      • Ahh. That's decent steel for the price. Where is this info disclosed?

        • Just lower down on gearbest. It's 58hrc. 440c isn't high end now, but reviewers say it holds an edge well. See here, this dude is using it for kindling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqMcLrPhir8

@ 3:15 and again @ 6:50 if you don't want to listen to Paddy plod along :)

        • @poohduck:
I have a few old knives in 440HC. These were well heat treated and was 59-60HRC with excellent geometry but with all it has going for it, I have recently replaced all my knives with CPM M4 for heavy work (breaking down redgum, bones or bush bashing), M390 for gutting and skinning, and a H1 for dive knife.

I get about tenfold more usage before needing to bring out the stones. Stropped after each use of course.

Except the H1. That thing is crap apart from rust resistance.

        • @tshow: I have one zdp189. I don't know the steels you mentioned - it's been a while since I researched this stuff. The price of knives goes up very fast once you get into exotic steels. I don't use mine for heavy work like you do. One of my favorite knives is an australian army issue shelham age old design with can opener and spike for rope work. It's so solid and useful. I reckon the steel is probably 440c and probably soft. It will still last me forever - I just touch it up now and again with a white ceramic stick (reasonably fine). I think in reality the firebird will be pretty good. What do you use for a strop? And you hunt! I thought this cleaver knife might be ok for flaying of larger animals.

        • @poohduck:
ZDP189 is amazing. I like it but it cost more than m390 and does not perform as well for outdoor knives. They are my first choice for kitchen knives but I cannot justify replacing my trusty Blue #2 inives to ZDP189. One day…

Strops… I use strop blocks. I will never use barber shop style strops again. The round out the edges over time and makes sharpening a pain. As you know, these new steels are a pain to sharpen as is.

I just get the hardest kangaroo leather I can find, stick it on to a 90x35 plank, I try to get 8-12 inches of runway length. I have 3 blocks, all impregnated with CBM at 1micron, 0.5 micron and 0.25 micron.

Sharpen with Shapton glass to 8k grit.

Every knife is shaving ready. Even the meat cleaver. :)

        • @tshow: Strop blocks :) Thanks for that; I'll make one.

        • @poohduck: I just looked up your CBN - you're pretty keen. I just had a look at those steels - I'd never heard of this stuff, blue and white :) I'm lower down the scale of knife enthusiast. I'm guessing you're into benchmade

        • +1

@poohduck: lol if you think it'll do that here. the guy is cutting a soft wood with the grain and no knots… Aus wood will likely do alot of damage in comparison.

        • +1

          @poohduck:
I actually don't own any dedicated folding knives (the skeletool being the closest thing). Maybe because custom folders cost ~USD5,000, maybe because I actually work my knives hard and a folder wouldn't hold up.

All of my fixed bush and hunting knives are customs (except the H1 dive knife). A few times more expensive than Benchmade and probably not worth the price difference but I justify it somehow (probably very poorly).

Hitachi Blue and White has been around for ages. Great value for money. Blue #2 holds an edge even with a thin spine (does so better than ZDP189 but will crack if twisted) but it is highly reactive. It tarnishes within 15 minutes if left damp so wiping in between several cuts is required. Alternatively, allowing a patina on the knife (which makes it look rusty, but isn't rust) buys more time.

Don't forget a good cutting board. A $500 kitchen knife on 400mm*250mm is a common sight and it's just sad. I got myself a 900x500 made for me in lieu of a set of ZDP189 and it was worth it.

PS. A cleaver like the one shown isn't suitable for hunting. Not a good shape for skinning and definitely not enough weight for breaking down even a small deer. For comparison, my cleaver is about 1.3kg.

:) Opinels have such a following.

  • Might need one these days if you're from the west

  • I received these today. I ordered two, one for me, one for a friend. 2 points: some people were worried whether these would get delivered. They did, and they were opened by Aust Post for inspection by ABF (is ABF Aust. Border Force?). So all is well there. 2 the quality is good. It is a big folder, and heavy. I have 3 spyderco knifes that weigh nothing. This thing has a heavy blade - I like it - flat grind. It shaves.
