Import Duty Calculation - Includes or Excludes Postage Costs?

I know that you will get charged import taxes for good valued over $1000,however, are the shipping costs included or excluded from that calculation? It's not clear on the numerous websites that I've checked.

    Included

    • Actually, this gets complicated a little bit.

Custom Duty is calculated on the value of the good excluding freight.

Then GST is calculated on Value of goods + Custom Duty + Freight.

      • Mr Hyde’s 2nd comment is correct.

The Customs value will come down to Customs exchange rate used which is generally the date the goods are shipped.

        Exchange rates are found here

  • Excluded

  • Maybe to elaborate on my original question, the value of the goods is just over $900 (baby stuff) but the freight takes it to $998 on today's exchange rate. Any movement in that rate could send it over $1000.

If item itself is $900 and there won't be import charges. Anything less than $1000 in item value (excluding shipping) is no import charges. Note on July things will be different story.

      • Thanks for this. What is changing in July?

          Gerry Harvey's Whinger Tax.

10% GST on ALL imports (may include shipping) regardless of value plus a $5 handling fee.

Was supposed to happen last year but got delayed. See what happens in this years budget.

Excluded - the same goods sent by private jet or via a cargo ship would be taxed the same - not based on their shipping cost. They are taxing the goods, not the service to ship it to you.
