What's in the box? No power cable? That's a deal breaker.

    • That will be an extra $80.

  • Ok but hmmm leave it at that lol

I highly recommend watching the videos on this repair guy's channel before buying any Apple product.

Apple computers are surprisingly poor quality in my experience.

Macbook Pro #1: Random reboots (likely faulty mainboard) Apple Carindale broke trackpad which Apple refused to fix.
Macbook Pro #2: Wobbly with Cloudy display. Apple replaced display, battery and warped cover under warranty. Tests indicate SSD is also faulty.

        • Hah, what a load of nonsense. That guy just posted an advertorial if ever I saw one.

It completely fails to address the fact that Apple only competes in the high end laptop market but ever other brand competes across the entire segment. I don't have access to the consumer reports ratings (and have no desire to pay), but how does Apple rate vs say, Thinkpad P series, Alienware, Dell Precision Laptops, etc.

This doesn't even get into the things like brand devotion, willingness to pay for repairs, OS vs hardware issues, etc.

I'm not even saying that Apple might not have the most reliable products, maybe they do, but that article is junk, and one thing Apple doesn't have is very friendly self repair of their products when something does go wrong or need upgrading.

        • That's because they don't sell very many compared to Lenovo or Dell or HP

        • @nmartin84:

Worked in I.T retail for 2 years, of all the brands/models you just listed my observed fault-rate of any MacBook (Air, Pro, etc) was close to zero. ThinkPads are great, any of the prosumer/corporate market products are great, but I've still seen them with faults (usually the type it was DOA or out of the box faults for e.g busted/bodgy screens, quality control issues, faulty SSD's at times). Dell not so great (had issues with XPS numerous times, coil whine, other weird issues), Alienware I never dealt with but I can't imagine its reliability being anything spectacular.

For MacBooks, I can't even recall ever seeing a MacBook being brought back at all for those kind of faults, or any other brand with stellar reliability across their whole product line (As I said, ThinkPads are great, can't say the same for all Lenovo's). The price is eye-watering, but it's certainly recouping money spent in R&D.

      • BUT DID YOU TRY OUT THE AIRS???

    • Sorry wrong place in thread

    • +1

Yep, this nerd is so worth watching. I spent hours watching him solder stuff and talk. It was mesmerising. Also, he hates apple, so you know he's clever.

      • +2

Yeah what sort of dick tries to educate other people? Clearly just an (profanity). And of course the opinions of someone who repairs Apple products is worthless compared to say a journalist, writer or some buyer of those products. He really should stop trying to educate and save people time, money and a lot of frustration and just become something actually useful to society like a real estate agent.

        • +1

Actually I was being completely serious.

Was this one of those cases of Poe's law in reverse, where the author is not sarcastic, bit comes across that way?

If so, looks like my up and down votes should be reversed, lel.

          He's good, worth watching.

Waiting for a new souped up Mac Mini…..

    • +2

Me too, butI wonder if Apple has already abandoned the development of Mac mini?

  • myer is 7299 now

    Sorry question about different post.
Does someone have a link to:
WD 8tb my book desktop drive only 188 (Insufficient quantity)
    Thank you

    • I would like this too

  • +1

    Is this good for facebooking?

    • +5

      This only supports MySpace.

    • -1

There are Apple sheep who would buy this for Facebook…

      • The same sheep are about to neg you to oblivion lol

  • +1

These guts in a Surface Studio, please

    • +1

yeah, a 5k Surface that will cost 10k….

    • well it's more of a business machine for video/graphics creators. They can usually claim a depreciation over a few years.

      • -2

Still could drop that cash on a laptop. Than you would have the ability to work from home or work without any issues

        • But you can't run MacOS programs on a windows machine. Plus the screen is much better on the imac.

        • -6

@smuggler: This is an open source laptop you can install windows, linux or macos on it

        • +1

          @Will Mcdonald:

You can't do that legally in a business. You need to buy from Apple.

Walk into any animation studio or graphics studio. They use Macs for good reason

        • +1

@Will Mcdonald: If you don't know anything about computers, do you think it wise to comment on them, on the internet, which is full of computer experts?

        • @Burnertoasty: 😳🙄

        • @Burnertoasty: lol i'm guessing your some computer expert. What makes you an expert?

        • @smuggler: LOL, uneducated morons on the net. You can purchase it just like any product the difference is Microsoft and apple os cost money. Linux doesn't. IT'S ALL LEGITIMATE for those illiterate people out there.

        • -1

@smuggler: You can purchase Mac OS legitimately and install it on any computer you want. Don't know what you are talking about

        • @Will Mcdonald:

You're just vile. I don't know any company that buys Mac OS separately. It's not possible to buy a High Sierra key separately. It's available for FREE on the app store for anyone with a registered Apple computer.

      • +2

smuggler and the rest: Why are you guys arguing? He makes a valid point but I wouldn't of compared with a laptop. The mac is still a desktop with an ac power supply, not a portable pc with a battery. The better comparison would be to throw something in way better for cheaper that would also sit on a desk permanently..

The main thing to remember here is Apple don't make the important parts, they are the most profitable company in the world for a reason.. They overcharge like nobody else!! Why pay a premium to apple when you can buy the parts yourself and throw em together. If you have the skills to use a computer of this caliber, you should be ashamed if you can't build one.

People always claim these are for professional use and for mainly graphics/rendering performance. 2 x 1080ti's in sli would absolutely smash the vega 64 in this mac so anyone claiming the performance is the best, needs to get their head checked.
If you want to buy an overpriced pc, at least go with a good one from someone like Digital Storm and you can at least customize it/upgrade it too.

    • +6

      Expensive? Yes!
      Crap? NO!
Get a 17 inch 4K laptop instead of an 27 inch 5K iMac? LOL!

    • A gaming laptop and a workstation that uses server grade hardware are made for different use cases. They're not directly comparable.

      • +1

They are comparable in that they are about as portable as one another!

Those 17” dual GPU laptops with overclockable CPUs have a power brick that weighs more than a standard laptop.

Also looks like he forgot to add a 27” 5K calibrated screen with the same colour reproduction figures - which is a huge draw card of the machine which people overlook when comparing.

        • -2

yeh 5.5kg vs a 10kg imac lol. The imac weighs just ass much as my desktop computer

        • @Will Mcdonald:

Who cares about weight when it's gonna be sitting on a desk the whole time

      • Nothing "server grade" about a RAID 0 array!

  • -2

    Rich people gonna rich

    Poor people gonna poor

Sadly I know somebody who has something similar to this it looks nice and yeah it's basically a luxury brand buy definitely not bang for buck

    Eh to each their own

    • Is it a Mac Pro or just a Mac? The latter starts at $1600 so there's a pretty large gap. I wouldn't call a standard Mac a luxury item.

  • +2

Even LTT can't have them fixed, dont waste your money.

  • Can this run God of War?

  • +2

Wait to get the following speech once you walk in HN:

Dont forget to take Product Care (and its 70% profit margin) as well as buying it under FlexiRent (or the new rebrand Lisa) who pays $150 straight to the salesman's pocket.

You should end up paying around $15,000 for that computer that way.

  • +3

    best oz deal in 2018

  • Oh it has a headphone socket. No deal!

  • Waiting for the qantas frequent flyer deal so I can pick one up at $5

  • Thank, just bought 1

  • if you have a business, this is ok. you can claim immediate deduction as its below the limit.

  • good lord that's expensive

  • Ummm no thanks… Did they remove the HDMI and USB ports?

  • Wow its so cheap LOL

  • Thanks op. Bought 2 for study room.

  • +4

Thanks! Got 10, theyre great as door stops.

    • Now I know why Myer's offer gone ;-)

    • wtf door steps are way better use than stops.

  • Dongles. How many dongles to plug in all the iThings?

  • -1

hmm a computer or a 2nd hand car ? hmm

    • +3

tbh you can say the same about a $500 laptop or a second hand car.

      • -1

true, but I would expect less issues with a car above $5000 than one at $500 depending if one carefully picks.

  • Can you get the better versions?

  • Wow. What a bargain.

  • When's the 32in gonna come out?

  • +3

Don’t think it’s unfair, actually for Apple this is cost effective.
For those who think they can build this on their own for half price, just take a look at how much a 5K display cost. Comparing to surface stuido and configured iMac 5K, this price is reasonable.

    • +1

Nothing reasonable about the amount they charge if you want a better CPU.

  • 😮
