Navman is a waste of money from my personal experience. The design is not good. The battery is even worse, apparently not allowed to start engine with Navman plugged on and tge battery drained very quickly. Avoid.
We have one of these Navmans and it works well for us. We have had Navmans and Tom Toms in the past and while they all did the job to a better or worse extent, we have no complaints with this one.
Unlike other models, it turns itself on and off with the ignition. With previous models you had to turn it off or on manually.
I don’t know about your comment that you are not allowed to have it plugged in while starting you engine - I did not see that instruction and ours stays plugged in.
On the battery, the instructions are quite clear that this unit is not meant to run on battery alone. I think the battery is just to allow it to shut down gracefully and retain some settings for quick start. Early models could run for a couple of hours on battery, but this is not designed for that. I guess if you want one that will run standalone for some time, this is not the unit you are after. (Maybe Google on your smartphone is better)
reviews tldr; life time maps only accessible after paying $140 unlock code. directions were too slow to keep up (slow signal). battery only lasts about 1-2 years (or less) before dying. random white or black screen flashes/freezing in software.
seems like other navman models lasted a lot longer, there seems to be issues with this model specifically with all customers reporting similar issues.
not good reviews on gps, so $150 for road cam is not worth it.
