Public Transport to Melbourne Airport

Living in the inner city I delight in taking the train and bus to Melbourne airport.

Take that Skybus and Melbourne airport!

Ridiculous charges for Skybus.

I walked 2hrs to Lara Station from Avalon Airport in summer and it wasn't as delightful.

  • u bloody rippa! nice work mate

  • I quite enjoy it too as long as I'm travelling on the train off peak, or have no luggage.

My biggest issue is the bus stop at Broadmeadows is horrible to wait at.

    • you only have to wait around 10 mins for the SmartBus to arrive. That's not long eh…

      • When I went the signs were wrong. It stated a 9 min wait. I waited 22.

    Ridiculous charges for Skybus.

Then don't, take the train/bus to the airport for only a few dollars instead

    • I'm doing that everytime i go to the airport on my own coin.

    • Thanks for the link.

  • It is possible, if you have the time (~ 1 hour from the CBD, if you get the connections right) and can manage whatever luggage you have with you.
Probably better to use that for returning to home, rather than for the more time-sensitive outward journey.

  • I once committed to the Broady detour extravaganza during peak hour.. next bus was 45 minutes away.. had to catch a cab…

Are you simply making a statement or did you have a question?

Living in the city centre, I always take SkyBus from Southern Cross - it's quite convenient. $19 is less than half the price of both Uber and Taxis. And it only takes 20-30 minutes.

On my own, I sometimes drive to the streets around Gladstone Park and catch the 901 to the airport. Wifey refuses to consider that option but will accept a family ticket on Skybus which is a good deal ($36 for adults and a couple of under 18 kids)

Similar cheapness at Sydney - if you walk from the airport from Domestic to Mascot (about 30 minute walk) you only pay regular suburban (opal) prices. Did this a couple of weeks ago and there were a fair few lugging their wheeled carry-ons on the train.

  • Thanks for letting us know.

I gladly pay the Skybus shuttle price so I don't have to use public transport when carrying travel cases.
