How different is Br Portuguese from the old country's version? Interested in exploring the Iberian peninsula.

I'm a bit biased, cos I love going to Portugal… but there are some grammatical and vocabulary differences, and a lot of (systematic) pronunciation differences! Think something like the difference between moderate Glaswegian and Australian. Mutually intelligible much of the time, but at other times can cause brainfreeze ;)

      • The difference is basically how English was spoken 100 years ago and now. Since português from Portugal I'd the old English in this context.

Pronunciation is very different. Much further apart than Latin American vs. Iberian Spanish. Some verb tenses are different, and very much a different set of vocabulary in some instances as expected (food for example).

I think if you have no intention of going to Brazil, you should look elsewhere to learn Portuguese. I took a semester of it where half the class wanted Brazilian and the other half wanted Portuguese, and it was a bit problematic at times attempting conversation with the other group.

That would have been a pretty disastrous class! Brazilians can have a hard time understanding Euro-Portuguese.

        • Absolutely. To make it worse, our class exercises were from a Brazilian book (with CD), but our teacher was Portuguese

  • Muito obrigado.
