Help Me Find a Barbie (BBQ)

Hi guys,

Yesterday I ended up taking my 4 burner Matador BBQ back to Bunnings as the whole thing had corroded (the BBQ was only 2 years old!). Worst corrosion I've seen in a BBQ.

So I need to find another and looking to spend at most $1k. Ideally with a side wok burner but most importantly one that won't corrode!

Apparently being coastal might have something to do with it or it was just simply faulty to begin with…

Any help would be great!

Was thinking that. If only you knew the pain of getting it back to bunnings…

This is a great option. I do this regularly with a mobile broadband modem (at a different store). So far I've been swapping it over about once every 3 months. I can see why it might be a bit of a pain with a bbq though!

      • What benefit does this achieve?

        • I think the benefit is getting a new bbq every couple of years.

        • @djsweet: I meant for you getting a new modem every 3 months.

        • @John Kimble: The benefit to me getting a new modem every three months is because that is how long they seem to last. I only swap it over when it stops working (seems to have a design issue and the battery starts to swell up).

        • @djsweet: Wow, that's terrible!

Gumtree. Can get a Weber Genesis for $600ish or cheaper or the lower Weber. Could also get a Weber Q or Kettle if they suit you.

    • +1 for Weber. Lifetime warranty! :)

      Gumtree second hand though…

    Here I am!! :D

  • Webber.

Myer or DJs often have them on special. You pay a little more for quality but they have a excellent warranty and they have heaps of accessories like the pizza base so it’s a multipurpose appliance.

Since you are costal I suggest purchasing a cover and putting it in a shed when not using it to protect it from the elements.

    • I reckon covers are worse. They trap moisture and encourage rust.

    • Agree with Weber.

I don't treat mine the best (Weber 3000), but it's still as strong as a tank.

    "Life in plastic, it's fantastic…"

    • TIL it's "life," not "wrapped." Thank you, this is important.

      • Well… sorry.

  • Personally I like the Beefmaster range at BBQs Galore: https://www.barbequesgalore.com.au/barbeques/barbeque-brands…

    • Think i'm gonna have the same issue as the Matador though. Similar builds :(

The topic should be titled "Which Weber Should I Buy?"

  • Heatlie are probably the best quality.

If you like grilling stuff, you may be disappointed with a Weber Q.
I have one and find it just doesn't get hot enough to cook a steak that is seared on the outside and pink inside like it should be. The heat is also quite uneven, it is hotter around the outside than in the middle

    • Agree. Nothing like a charcoal sear when it comes to steak. The dripping fats and subsequent smoke just increases the flavour considerably. https://www.seriouseats.com/2015/09/charcoal-vs-gas-grills-t…

      • Agree totally, nothing beats real fire, but even compared to other gas BBQs the Q doesn't get very hot as the flame is small and far away from the grid. I guess it is meant for cooking whole cuts of meat, and not searing steaks

    • If you like a seared steak, cook no more than 2 or 3 steaks at a time with the lid down and preheat on high for at least 5 minutes. Buying thicker steaks also helps.

Also you will need to get extra BTU's buy drilling out the gas jets by 10-15 percent.
The jets are around 0.80 to 1.00mm. The webber Q's are designed to run on minimal power, that is why the lid must be down to BBQ at all times.

  • Interested in the the fact they took it back - was it still under warranty? Or part of their guarantee of sorts? Did you still need the receipt?

    • If you buy something expensive like that, or TV etc, always put the receipt WITH the item, wrapped in plastic for protection. It never works when we say to ourselves "I'll put it in this cupboard and remember that it's here when I need to return it in 2 years". Nope. Can't even remember what I had for dinner on Monday.

      • And I always made fun of mum when she did that… mothers know best!

    • Yea kept the receipt as on the day I made a few high value purchases. So was wise…

  • Weber

  • We have a webberq and a beef eater. Beef eater is better by far.

  • Just ask Ricky, Julian and Bubbles

  • Who needs a Barbie when you can have a Sally?

  • Find a local engineering work shop tell them your budget, for 1k they could build you a solid steel BBQ that will last a life time.

  • what about a charcoal kettle bbq like a weber. this one has a "gourmet bbq system" grill that you can stick a wok in when you take the insert out
