Best Value Way to Get from Hordern Pavilion to Sydney Northern Suburbs after Concert?

Will be taking my teen daughter to a concert she wants to go to on Thursday night at the Hordern Pavilion. My last experience there, with a member of our party having parked on site, was bad - it took us literally 2 hours to just get out of the car park after the concert.

Not sure how frequent buses are from the Hordern to Central that time of night (around 11 - 11:30?) and I imagine getting onto one may also take ages.

Worst case we can walk from the Hordern to Central, then take a train to Hornsby. I'd expect that would be around 2 hours door-to-door, though the walk might be a tad dodgy around there that time of night.

I imagine taxis would be hard to come by, and Uber would be surging.

I don't really know the area, so not sure if there are alternatives for parking nearby.

What would be the best value way to get home (ie, not too expensive, but reasonable time)?

  • I would personally walk to Central (same transit time, less hassle), but I understand your hesitation of walking around near midnight on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. If taking a bus that late at night you might have to take the bus to the city though and travel to another station on the T1 Northern Line.

You can always try leave on the dot at 11 pm to catch the bus before the crowds leave but you never know how many other people have the same idea, meaning you might miss the first bus.

Maybe someone here can elucidate how many people typically walk to Central after these concerts? Taxis might be cheaper than UberX I suppose in these instances.

I always park near Centennial Park, but so does everyone else :)

  • JUst take public transport. It's the Sydney city. Pretty safe after a concert. The walk is literally 15 min if you're not fat.

Park near Hornsby station, train to central, bus to Moore Park from Eddy Ave. There will be lots of public transport to the station after the concert.

though the walk might be a tad dodgy around there that time of night.

Not really. It's full of asians, other concert-goers and students.

    • Sadly, I'm pretty sure there won't be lots of public transport direct to Central after 11 pm. As someone that lives in the Eastern Suburbs (and worked nights at Entertainment Quarter and the city) it's a near-lifelong frustration…I've always said that Central isn't treated that "central" when it comes to buses (compared to Elizabeth St).

So in most cases some walking will be involved.

      • What about all those 300 buses that go from Eddy Ave? We're talking Thursday night after a concert. Surely there is. I know the UNSW bus goes until after 11pm

        • Ahh, I thought you somehow read my mind but then I re-read my original comment where I said Saturday ;) I still think Thursday won't be much better heading towards Central after 11 - 11.30 pm (like every half hour for a few and then nothing), but I'd Google Map it just in case. The in between buses to e.g. Museum station isn't so far, but that park next to Central does looks creepy after dark.

    • +1

      Park at Gordon etc.

    • though the walk might be a tad dodgy around there that time of night.

There's usually a big stream of people doing the walk after any gig so there's comfort in numbers.

Also the North Shore line is pretty tame even at night; I'd do a Gordon or Pymble transit then car it home.

  • Taxis are frequent and easy to find, uber's surcharge is negligible on such a short trip.

  • walk

  • Thanks everyone. Ended up walking to it as we arrived at Central earlier than expected, and walked back to Central afterwards as the traffic was chaotic. So, it took us 25-30 min each way, so a fair hike!
