I'm sick of wearing pants that don't fit well (I'm fat) I'm looking to get some pants tapered and hemmed, what can I expect to pay? Does it matter where I go?

If you're looking to purchase pants as well, Uniqlo offers free alterations when you purchase their pants.

Do they taper pants? I thought it was just hemming for short asses like me.
I'm not sure if they taper, as I have only had hemming done before.
However, when I was there last week, the guy next to me was having the waist area adjusted as it was too loose for him.
$20 is the going rate at a not-fancy alterations place rather than a tailor, though if you have access to a sewing machine it isn't hard (admittedly, in my house I claim it is my partner's area of expertise).
Several of the Internet clothing places (e.g. TM Lewin, Land's End) offer custom leg lengths. If you are paying those prices for pants anyway, they are good options. I would also suggest, as a person who is fatter than I like, that it is worth it to spend a bit more on quality clothes that fit well, compared to just buying the cheapest, if you are seeking to make the best of your appearance.How many pairs of pants are you looking to get?
If you're that keen on "getting pants that fit well", go to a tailor (yes, it'll cost a bit more) and get one made first so you know what a pair of well-fitting pants feels like. Then use that as a guide for your future purchases and alterations.

I think I'll go UNIQLO for pants too next time. I go to the trouble of finding a good deal on pants though then pay another $15 to get hemmed.
I find in Australia it is more difficult to get varied lengths off the rack as it is in say North America or the UK. For example buying pants in a 32/30 which saves time and money.
