Recommendation Brake Rotors and Pads Replacement in Melbourne

I've got a 07 Honda Civic, 190,000km on the odometer.

I've been getting this choppy sensation when applying brakes and machinic told me they are about due to be replaced.

I can't buy the parts and fit them myself because I don't have the space & tools to do that.

Can anyone recommend good reputable shops for the job around Blackburn or Dandenong area?

What do I need to watch out for when getting a quote? Should I care about what brand or rotors and pads they use?

I found this guy - http://dandybrakes.my-free.website/ while researching, it looks like they sell parts and fitting & cheap (judging by the look of the website). Don't know if I should go to them.

Can you buy the parts and ask your mechanic to fit? Should be pretty cheap. I do that with my independent Honda mechanic in Nunawading (buy the parts myself e.g. QFM pads and DBA rotors) and ask him to fit. You may also need to get your brake fluid flushed and replaced as part of the brake service as well.

The only problem is, is that if there is an issue with the hardware (Rotors, pads), the mechanic won't cover it. Then they will finger point to wriggle out of fixing. I understand it can be very rare however it is important to note.

I reckon, if the mechanic does except to install with DIY rotors, they might jack up the price to offset.

You can ask the Mechanic if they supply and fit the brand rotors/pads that you like and that will be a win-win.

      Cheers

      • You pointed out exactly what I was thinking.

But if I have something about cars and have a mechanic friend who doesn't mind BYO parts this would be a good option to go.

    • hey mate could you PM me his deets

These are pretty important components; it is ok to try to minimise the cost but I wouldn't put price above safety.

  • Give Mitcham Discount Tyres a call.

They've been the cheapest and most reliable place I've found.

  • I sourced parts from these guys:

    https://www.empoweredautoparts.com.au/

Purchased using an ebay sale code. They put up with 4 different phone calls with me with questions (a mechanic had advised me against getting non-genuine parts as a supplier had cautioned him against it… The aftermarket version was far cheaper ($479/pair vs. $700 for a single rotor and the $479 included a pair of brake pads). Tremendously helpful crew, had the parts picked and ready for pick up within an hour following a quick call advising them the ebay transaction had been completed.

Mechanic fit the parts the following day and road tested, he commented that everything fit as it should and the brake pads were what he considered "good quality".

They have a workshop in Melbourne, and while I can't vouch for their fitting service, my experience with them was hugely positive.

  • Ask a friend? Surely someone you know has some tools and a jack, and would help you out for a couple of hours one Saturday?
It is literally undoing the bolts on the wheel and the two on the caliper and swapping all the gear over. You may need a G-clamp to push the caliper piston back in but thats really all there is to it.
You should be able to borrow a torque wrench and find the torque settings for the caliper bolts on the net.

Easier said than done but you will learn something about repairing your car and that is the best thing of all.

You only need a parking space to do it in. Its not like taking an engine out, which also can be done in a parking space if you are careful. Done THAT before.
